Microsoft Security Essentials
I cannot download Microsoft Security Essentials as it says I have a pirated copy of Windows. I called the TechNet support line and they said we can't download any Microsoft Apps unless they are on the TechNet download list. Is this true??????? I find
it hard to believe that we can't test MS Security Essentials!!!
Any other help out there or are they right?
Thanks,
Bob S

Have you activated your OS installation, Or are you testing it without inputting the key?
A lot of Microsoft Software from the Downloads site requires an Activated OS Installation to validate the install is genuine.Lee Bowman MCITP MCTS

Yes, I activated it last September a couple of days after installation. I have had no problems with updates, except for this one. My system info says it is activated. When I boot up, on rare occasions it says that Windows isn't genuine, but if I click
through the menus and get to the wallpaper, all is right again.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum.
First, try to
validate Windows online to see what the result is.
Based on my research, the validation issue can be caused by several factors, such as incorrect local system settings or an incorrect Product Key.
Currently, we can try the following steps to check the result:
1.
Test this issue in
Clean Boot.
2. Run
Microsoft Genuine Advantage diagnostic tool.
1)
Install and launch MGA Diagnostic Tool.
2)
Click the Continue button.
3)
Under the Windows tab, click the Resolve button if it is highlighted.
4)
Restart the computer.
3.
Run SLUI 4.exe and re-activate Windows 7 by phone.
Hope it helps.

Hi Alex,
I clicked on the "validate Windows " hyperlink in your message and then checked the "validate windows" button. It paused for a few seconds and took me to the validating 'cyclone' window. Again after a few seconds it took me to the download
Microsoft Security Essentials page and said I had a genuine Windows 7 installation and was qualified for a free copy of MSE. When I try to install the program it takes me all the way through the firewall question (yes, I left it checked to turn on a firewall)
and then says I don't have a valid copy of Windows and may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This is still all still under a 'clean boot' process.
I also ran the MGA diagnostics. I didn't get the Resolve button as it was greyed out which I assume tells me there is no resolve.

File Scan Data-->
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\user32.dll[6.1.7600.16385], Hr = 0x800b0100
This file is a Windows DLL. Maybe the DLL is damaged/modified.
Please start the command prompt (cmd.exe) with admin rights [1] and run sfc [2]:
sfc.exe /scannow
Is it able to find and repair broken files (create the txt file shown under [2] and look if the user32.dll and all other files are restored)? If not, replace the DLL with the file from your DVD [3].
best regards
André

Hi Alex & Andre,
The problem was solved with some effort. I ran the sfx check and it said it fixed something. I then tried to enter the command given in ref 2) but nothing happened. I then tried to open the cbs.log file and it wouldn't let me. So, I copied the cbs.log to
my second partition and opened it there. I searched for "[SR] Cannot repair member file" but got no results. I then searched for "user32.dll". It said that it had repaired it. So, I rebooted and ran MSEsetup again and it went through
this time. I was able to install it and update it.
THANKS for your help!
Bob S
P.S. Is there a similar forum for MS Office 2007?

Alex,
Can I throw a "me too" on the fire? (I hate those! But...) I have XP Home SP3 on my home system and everything has been running along fine for months and months. Suddenly today MSE tells me "Windows did not pass genuine
validation" and "Security Essentials has been disabled".
The system is 100% genuine. The time is set correctly. The online validation passes. I downloaded some Microsoft Genuine Advantage validation tool and ran it locally... it says everything is fine. I went to Windows Update and it was content
that my system is kosher.
I found 87 articles that said to check the security on "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data\date.dat" to make sure that Everyone had full access to it and (after finally finding an article that said with XP Home you
only get the Security tab when running in Safe Mode and logged in as the actual Administrator account) that did nothing.
I ran the "sfc /scannow" command suggested above... it ran for a long time and exited without saying a word and... no change.
It is an interesting coincidence that this just happened out of the blue... on the first of the month. Red herring? Possibly. But was working just FINE yesterday.
Any suggestions would be most welcome. I was supposed to work from home today because of the snow storm here in MA but instead a wasted most of the day chasing this problem as I was reluctant to tunnel into work with no working anti-virus/malware software.
