Microsoft update site blocked by what?
I was recently hit with some sort of malware/adware called System Tool 2011. I went to a reliable website and followed the instructions on how to remove the intruder. After I followed all the steps and "removed" the program I was able to use my computer normally, except that when I try to go to Microsoft Update, I get "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage". I attempted to reach Windows Update with a different browser as suggested by a moderator of this site, but it didn't work and he instructed me to post my question here. It's the only website that this happens to. This has been going on for 3 weeks and I'm honestly scared to publicize it anywhere but here. I have a feeling there may be remnants of the intruder blocking my computer. Also, I was told by the site to replace a host file, which prompts a message daily =\. Any help at all is greatly appreciated! Thanks for looking1 person needs an answerI do too

I didn't think that MS updates would work in a non Internet Explorer browser (at least not Firefox or Chrome).Even if the updates do work in another browser, that would not fix your issue since the updates should work in Internet Explorer.Where is your other thread here with your system information and what the suggestions have been so far so we can see what has been happening? What is it that prompts with a message daily and what is the message? What is the reliable web site that you used? I would like to see what happened there. Why did you not stick with the other reliable website until your issue was resolved?Did you replace the hosts file or did somebody just suggest something like "try replacing your hosts file and see what happens" and not include directions on how to do it? Do, or do not. There is no try.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whatforum/thread/6d87bcc4-5622-402a-bc46-565ffb194a25 Is my first post where the mod suggested I post here. The website I used to try and resolve the problem was bleepingcomputer.com. I replaced my hosts file with one that was supplied by bleepingcomputer as part of their instructions to remove System Tool 2011. I didn't stick with them because I thought it was kind of fishy that only Microsoft Update suddenly wasn't accesible. Like something was blocking my computer from removing a virus/malware or whatever category it would fall under. I have to restart my computer and wait for the prompt (something about generic host file...etc)and I will copy it to here when I get it. Thanks a lot for all your help!
