Momentary Computer Lock Ups/Freezing after Install of Win 7
OK, here is the full story of my notebook issue: I have an Asus notebook (K40in), couple years old. It came with Windows Vista (32 bit) and I recently upgraded to Windows 7 (64 bit) using the clean install option. I have all the latest recommended drivers installed for the correct version of windows. My problem is that since upgrading to Win 7 (never happened in Vista), my computer will randomly lock/freeze/hang for anywhere from 20 seconds to a couple of minutes and then it will just start working again as if nothing happened, without a restart. It just comes back to life on its own. Sometimes it will happen a couple times an hour, sometimes only once a day. When the computer is in this locked state, it is completely unresponsive. If a song is playing, it seems to continue playing but in a distorted and very slow fashion. Here's what I have done so far to try and diagnose this problem: -I have run an intensive hardware scan of the entire computer (CPU, motherboard, ram, hard drive, video chipset, Stress Test, etc) using software available at my place of work. It's called PC Check if I'm not mistaken. -I have removed all the optional Asus software I installed. -I've updated the BIOS to the latest version for this notebook from the Asus website. -I've tried different versions of graphics drivers (from asus, nvidia, windows updates) -I'm monitoring my CPU temperatures and they seem normal (40-55ish). Also cleaned all air vents to make sure it was not a heat issue. -After a lock up, if i check the Windows Action Center and/or Event Viewer, there is no indication that anything was picked up by the computer. I'm really not sure what is going on here. When the laptop is working, it works great. It's not slow, or laggy. No other issues at all actually. But this problem is becoming a bit of a nuisance! The lockups are so random, like the last time I had itunes playing the the background (I actually completely uninstall itunes and reinstalled it just in case) and I was scrolling through the song list on Rock Bands web site. The only remaining course of action I can think of is to do Another fresh install of Windows but I'd really rather not. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know! Thanks cc971751

Hi, cc971751, This reads like the Windows kernel is struggling with a bad driver. Maybe the best way to deal with this is to check the DPC's, see http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/140263-how-to-get-the-cause-of-high-cpu-usage-by-dpc-interrupt/ for help in tracking down and resolving your problem.

Hi, I would like to know if the issue only occurs when running program. Please understand the big program will take some time to initialization. If you are running 32-bit program, it will need time to meet the 64-bit system. Also, you can test the issue without running any program or in Clean Boot, update the chipset from ASUS site. http://usa.asus.com/Notebooks/Versatile_Performance/K40IN/#download Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information. If no event log is labeled, it is to say there is no error occurred when the computer freezing.
