Mouse recognition .
Is there any way that you could get mouse recognition added to the new Windows 7? The way Windows works as of yet is really quite annoying because of the constant clicking one has to do when maneuvering about in wiindows explorer is time consuming. I'm a bit surprised Windows hasn't made the move to this as of yet. I started using Linux a number of years ago and it uses recognition automaticaly. Is this something you folks have thought about integrating? That would be so cool!!

all - Could you do us poor Windows guys who aren't exactly up to speed a favor and explain exactly what you mean by "mouse recognition"..?My first impression based on the title of your post was that you were having problems with Windows recognizing hardware. But I figured you had something different in mind given the context of the rest of your post. I'm assuming you're referring to mouse GESTURE recognition - something along the lines of Gestikkfor Ubuntu... I'm not sure if you're aware - but Windows 7 does have a few tricks along those lines already in place - Aero Peek and Aero Shake are two such gestures now supported by Windows 7. Peek allows you to view the desktop (and any gadgets running on it) by moving the mouse cursor to the extreme bottom right corner of the screen into that small block. If you click on that space, all windows will be minimized. Aero Shake allows you to minimize all other windows - except the current one by grabbing the title bar with the mouse and giving it a shake. You can also maximize or tile windows on the left or right side of the screen by grabbing the title bar and dragging the title bar to the top or left/right side of the screen. You can also "restore" a window to default size by grabbing the maximized task bar and pulling it away from the top of the screen.

Ok.. :) I thought I was explaining myself well. Also maybe it's not the right name for it but, But I'll give another go anyway. No the program you mention is not what I'm refering to, also not those cool options you mentioned about your OS. I love those cool features, this is why I'd love to see this one more feature. :) Say you have your browser open, ( I never use program full screen.) You also have two different windows explorer windows open. All with a bit of an offset on the desktop so you can see them all. Windows for as long as I know about has never been able just move your mouse from one window to another and scroll that specific window, weather it be the first browser window or the second windows explorer window even if that specific windows is below one of the others. It only scrolls the window that is highlighted and foremost. Even inside windows explorer, say you are doing something like renaming files in a specific folder. Then you want to copy that file to a different folder on the computer, you have to click onto a left pane folder to scoll the left pane folder to even see the desired folder you want to copy it to. It doesn't scoll by just moving you mouse over to the left pane. So you can just drag and drop the file in question. I know you can rightclick/copy, but the mouse being able to scroll anything anywhere regardless of which pane it is on is so helpful. I know this isn't Linux..... But in linux this works flawlessly and has for years. Don't get me wrong about your OS, I love this new version. I tried the beta version for Vista when that OS started and was in no way impressed. This one is a different story, It's awesome. You ' poor Windows guys ' have done a great job with this OS. I'll definitely be purchasing this OS when it becomes available. Regardless if this 'mouse recognition' is changed or not. :) Thanks for taking the time to try and answer my question.....

I like the way you think, so I tried it now. I can at least move a single shortcut using your exact method, and I do believe pressing "ctrl", "shift", etc givesdifferent options (copy instead of move, etc). But IRL I hate mousepads and I really would not want to have it do more than it does now because a large insect or my cat was on it.So, Um your point was, can I do something to a file without having to click the destination which is in a subfolder? Yes.

Regardless if this 'mouse recognition' is changed or not. :)Thanks for taking the time to try and answer my question..... Ah... I see where you're going with this. It would seem many eons (or at least it feels like eons) ago, there was a feature in the Mouse control panel for most MS style mice. It was, if I recall correctly, able to automatically move focus to wherever the mouse pointer was sitting. And if I recall correctly it used to be called "X-Mouse". That feature seems to be missing from the mouse control panel for Windows 7, Vista, XP, and 2000 - so it's likely going back as far as Win 98 or 98 SE. I haven't any idea when or where it disappeared - or why for that matter. Though, in some ways, the mouse pointer already does this sort of behavior. For instance, if you're in IE or Firefox and you're posting a rather lengthy reply here (one that exceeds the size of the reply box (as this one does), it will scroll the reply box up and down (until it reaches the BOM or EOM) and then it will scroll the rest of the window. If your mouse pointer is outside of the reply box, it will just scroll the entire thread. At any rate, feel free to post this suggestion in the "Have Comments about Windows 7 Beta (Part 2)" forum. If the developers like the idea, and they've got time to putz around with it, they may include it in a future release. Posts madethere containing requests are gathered regularly and sent to the development team.

>>but the mouse being able to scroll anything anywhere regardless of which pane it is on is so helpful.>Though, in some ways, the mouse pointer already does this sort of behaviorI can change focus, yes. I can drag a file from one window to the next and have that newer-focused window automatically scroll to a subfolder, and when I release my button it conveniently drops off the file. Yes. I cannot seem to randomly scroll(???)EDIT:my possibly focus friendly mouse/mousepad/trackball drivers prohibit me from having an authoritative answer, although the results seem to be very similar.

I'm not sure how I can explain this any better, so I'll leave it alone for now.. Thanks people for the responses...

Kristaps just wrote a really great post about needing to scroll in an unfocused window that has the cursor. If onlyI knew how to link... http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/0abaccc3-1187-4527-9113-c8e1629832db/
