Moved Library doesn't refresh on delete / explorer crashes (BUG?)
Hi, hopefully someone can help me with what seems to be a bug. this is my situation. I've got a win 7 prof 64bit, with two disk c: (128GB SSD) and d: (500GB 7200rpm). After installing windows I right clicked on all my libraries (My pictures, My Documents, ...) and moved them from c: to d:. This all works fine except when I delete something in one of my libraries the explorer window doesn't refresh automatically. When adding a file or when I rename a file it refreshes just fine. If I delete something on my c:-drive eveything refreshes as normal. It also only seems to happen in subfolders of my library folders: D:\My Pictures\ refreshes ok on delete, D:\My Pictures\any folder\ doesn't refresh ok I can get the library subfolders to refresh ok but it crashes the explorer process. These are the steps I do: 1) Pin explorer to the taskbar 2) Pin a link to a folder in a library to the pinned explorer, for example: D:\My Pictures\Screenshots 3) Close all explorer windows and open the screenshots folder by right clicking the pinned explorer and selecting the link to screenshots 4) Now when you add and delete a file or simply delete a file, the explorer refreshes OK. Next close the explorer window 5) Now when you click the pinned explorer menu again, explorer crashes 9 out of ten 6) When you navigate to the screenshots folders without using the pinned shortcut the folder doesn't refresh on a delete, and the explorer doesn't crash. I've also tried this in safe mode, and also tried a clean boot. And the problem keeps existing. Kind regards Peter Proost

This behavior does not occur on our computers. How do you move these libraries? The correct way is right-clicking->Properties->Location tab->Change the path. If the libraries are redirected with right way, please let us know if the issue persists if you put the libraries back. Also please let us know if it occurs with other user profiles. Hi, sorry for not posting a reply for a while but I didn't receive a notification that there was a reply to my question. I initially moved the libraries, the way you specified. I've tried putting back the library and the problem still exists. I also created a new profile, a delete refreshed the explorer ok, but on a couple of occasions the explorer crashed after doing, delete => refresh => closes explorer => open explorer. Peter

Hi, First the forums notification system changed and you need to reconfirm your email. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/reportabug/thread/52c75e6b-adf9-41f5-a61a-88ce9c91f799 Do you have a restore point prior to the date the initial Library changes were made? Copy your new data and then restore to that point. Then redirect the folders as Arthur suggested. Click Start=>type recovery in the search box. Select recovery from the results. Open system restore and follow the directions. Again, choose a point prior to the first time you moved the Library folders. Much faster than thrashing around.

A restore is my final option, because the very first thing I did was moving the folders. And I wouldn't like to reinstall all my software: visual studio 2003/2005/2008/2010, sql server and a lot of other software.

This issue is caused by software confliction. Please troubleshoot in Clean Boot Mode. Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program However if the issue persists in Clean Boot Mode, I suggest you try ShellExView. Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. Run ShellExView, in the pane sort the entries with manufacturers. Disable all non-Microsoft *.dll files, and check the result. If the issue does not occur, one of the files can be the culprit. We could narrow down it one by one. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, the problem perists in Clean Boot Mode. I installed ShellExView and disabled all non-Microsoft dll's and the problem also persists. By doing some more testing I've found out that the problem only exists when I navigate to the Libraries via the Libraries shortcut If I navigate to the My Pictures library via D:/My Pictures everything works fine.

This behavior does not occur on our test computers. So it should not be a bug. Does it work if you boot in Safe Mode? I just suspect that the issue occurs because you have done some tweaks for Windows Explorer or shortcuts. How does it work if you create another user profile? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi I've tried it in safe mode and with an other user and the problem keeps persisting.

Have make some tests again and did not found such issue on our test computers. You may restore the locations to default and check the result. If the issue does not occur, re-redirect the folders again. If it does not resolve the issue, run sfc /scannow. If it does not help either, try In-place Upgrade to repair the system. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, restoring the folders to the default locations and sfc /scannow didn't fix the problem. I will try an In-place upgrade next. Does this remove any programs or files?

I'm also willing to install some logging tool if that would aid you in tracking the problem.

Hi, Installed programs would not be removed. As I know there is no such tool available. If you would like to track the whole process, maybe you could use Process Monitor. Hi, it seems that moving the folder to the original location (c:), deleting the folder on my d: drive and then recreate the folder on the d: drive and move the folder back from c: => d: solves the problem.
