My Network Places Protocol
Good evening everyone, I apologize if this is a topic that has been explored before, but I did some searching and haven't found an answer. I was curious as to what protocol is used to find the computers in "My Network Places." I've noticed that on Wireless systems, I'm usually not able to see other systems on my network. However, on Wired systems I can see them all fine. These two systems are also on the same domain. I'm assuming that whatever is used is simply not a routable protocol. Thanks! ~Jeeves

The computer list shown in "My Network Places"/"Network Neighborhood" comes from the Computer Browse List. The creation and updating of this list depends on various factors such as running the "Computer Browser Service" on all network clients (disabled by default on 2008, Vista, and 7), Broadcasts, and WINS for routed networks. For large complex networks, it is very difficult to get a complete list together. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.
