Need Help Searching in Windows 7
In Previous Versions of Windows, I would perform a Search in FileFinder Similar to the Following:All *.DOC files modified between 12/20/2009 and 12/24/2009 that contain the string "Santa".In Windows 7, I can easily see how to Seach for *.DOC.I do not see any way to tell it to examine the Contents. When Selecting Dates, I only seem to be able to select one specific day, or more general terms such as one month old.Is there some Hidden "Search Feature" to enable more complex searches? It seems that Search has had it interface "simplified" so to be less confusing to some. However, It also seems to have made more complex searches far more difficult. If These searches are not easily native in Windows, Does anyone know of any Good 3rd Party Search Programs I could install?I did not care for GoogleDesktop.

Hi RaleighITGuy,Windows Search 4.0 is a bit different than you're used to, and frankly I've always found it a bit flaky, but if it's going to work you'll need to use the proper syntax to get good results:In Explorer, click the root folder under which you'd like to perform the search, then in the box at the upper-right of Explorer, type the following:filename:*.doc Searches for files named *.docext:doc Same as abovekind:docs Finds all kinds of documentsbagel Finds files that contain the word "bagel"kind:docs bagel Finds document files (maybe .txt, maybe .doc, etc.) that contain the word "bagel"The syntax of what can be entered up in that box is quite complex and can be combined. This page describes it in some detail:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/technicalresources/advquery.mspxThe overview for Windows Search can be found here:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/default.mspxKeep in mind that the search is generally pre-indexed, and can be fast, but there are problems with indexes getting out of date or being flat wrong. In my opinion it's impossible to implicitly trust the results of Windows Search. For that reason, for when it really matters I have downloaded a tool called grepWin. If you're at all familiar with regular expressions it can be very powerful.http://tools.tortoisesvn.net/grepWin-Noel
