For some reason, today when I logged into Windows XP Mode on my Windows 7 Desktop, all of the desktop icons and files that were on my Windows 7 desktop were now on my Windows XP Mode desktop. From my Windows XP Mode deskop, I dragged the icons/files into my recycle bin. As a result my icons on my Windows 7 Desktop no longer worked. I cannot find those files anywhere now.

Most of the time the icons on a desktop are just links to the files and not the actual files themselves. That being said, you can try using System Restore to see if that will get them back. Do System Restore in XP Mode first and if that isn't satifactory then do System Restore in Win 7.
