Net share through VPN
Hello, I have a Win2K8R2 SP1 server running AD and a file share. Using a 3G stick, a users set ups a VPN against the site (where the server is residing) and connects without issues (he can ping some pc in the LAN behind the VPN). Trying to reach the file shared folder using \\MYSERVER reported an error saying "Extended Error". If using \\MYSERVER.mydomain.net , everything was OK. The DNS was OK as he was able to NSLOOKUP this server using both the full domain name and the host name. Any ideas? Thanks

On his home computer, put mydomain.com into the DNS search suffix of the TCP properties of his network connection. Then he should be able to connect using just the remote computer name.

That setup was working a few days ago. I don't know what could have changed.

Hi, By default in Windows Windows 2008 , when a machine attempts to resolve unqualified multi-label name, the DNS client will attempt to resolve the name as specified. The DNS suffix search order will NOT be used. It is disabled by default to performance concern .The registry key “AppendToMultiLabelName” = 1 can be added to change the default behavior. You will have two ways to change the registry on them: 1. Modify the registry: Notice: please backup your registry before modify! Created the DWORD : AppendToMultiLabelName under HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient dword: 0 = Do not append, 1 = Append After that, please restarted the DNS Client Service 2. Group Policy location - (run gpedit.msc) 1. Computer Configuration 2. Administrative Templates 3. Network 4. DNS Client 5. “Allow DNS Suffix Appending to Unqualified Multi-Label Name Queries” Hope that helps Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
