Network Adapter Issues
Simply put, my computer refuses to connect to certain networks, either wirelessly or via cable. According to my computer's self-diagnostics and such; "There might be a problem with the driver for the Local Area Connection adapter. Windows couldn't automatically bind the IP protocol stack to the network adapter." It gives the same message for the Wireless Network Connection adapter. I can connect to the internet elsewhere via other networks, but this is my home network and thus where I'm most likely going to be for 90% of the time. I tried going to the device manager on a whim and checking out options to update the drivers that way, just in case, but as really should have been expected it couldn't find any updates because it can't get on the internet to check for them. So, my question is this; I have access to other computers with internet, and intend to download drivers on them and then move them to my laptop and install them that way, but where should I get them from and which ones should I get? I could google, but I don't really trust any of the sites that pop up as results, at least not without some third party confirmation that they're kosher. Also; is this even a driver problem? The device names are Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20) and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. Thanks for your time.

Hi , When did this issue occur? Did it occur before? From your description, I know that the computer can connect the Internet in other locations. Have you tried to use another computer to connect your home network? Please test if the issue is caused by the modem or router. Meanwhile, I suggest you set up a new network connection to test the issue and disable the security program temporarily to check if it is blocking the Internet access. The other computers in my house connect to the network just fine; it's just my laptop that has problems. I have managed to get her on the net using a netgear USB adapter I had lying around, but when I attempted to diagnose my actual wireless connection to see if windows could find a solution my computer started crashing repeatedly. I restored the system by a few weeks and it seems to be working fine now; the problem may have been caused by a bad update. It's still not connecting via the built-in wireless, but it is accepting the netgear adapter without issue. I'll report back with any more news as it comes.

Hi , I am glad to hear that your computer is able to access the network via netgear USB adapter. This issue may be related to the NIC driver. At this time, I suggest you download and install updates via Windows Update, update or reinstall the NIC driver and update the routers firmware. Hope it helps.Tracy Cai TechNet Community Support
