Network Connection is down...
I've ran all the notable spyware/malware programs or built in utilities out there: HiJack This, Adaware, Advanced Sys Care, Comodo, CCleaner, etc.repaired the TCP/IP stack. tried multiple browsers. even rolled back my system way before the problem began. Does that mean it's a hardware failure?hardwire and wireless are down on this computer only. Same cat5 works to other computers from same router in same port.Still can't get a connection to the internet. Cannot even hit Google.com on port 80 via a CLI telnet.Does anyone have any other ideas? I'm friggn stumped and to be honest, I'm more stump'd than I've been in a long time with computers.... am I overlooking something?1 person needs an answerI do too

Is the problem your computer or the connection between the modem between the router / modem and your Internet Service provider's server? Do any other computers connect to the internet through the router / modem? Have you tried an ethernet cable connection between computer and modem? Are you located in the UK or elsewhere? Who is your Internet Service Provider? Is your broadband connection through a telephone line which is shared with other devices. Are filters fitted? Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there? Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, Hardware, and Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code? To see Hidden Devices (Non Plug and Play Drivers) you need to select View, Show Hidden Devices. It is necessary to do this every time you open Device Manager if you need to see them. A further complication can be Ghosted Devices –installed but not connected!http://www.lockergnome.com/windows/2005/04/29/display-hidden-devices-in-device-manager-xp/ Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any from than more than 48 hours ago. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. You will see a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. This places a copy of the report into your Clipboard. Paste into the body your message. Make sure that this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Try a few basic tests. You say that you have other computers connected to the same router. On the machine that you're having problems with, bring up a command prompt (Start -> Run -> "cmd") and enter the command: ipconfig /allDo the same for a working computer connected to the same router. The "Default Gateway", "Subnet Mask", "DHCP Enabled", and "DNS Servers" lines should read the same for both computers. The "IP Address" line should be the same except for the last (4th) number. Also go to Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections (Tab) -> Lan Settingsand verify that all settings there are the same for both computers.Let us know what you find.HTH, JW

For the 1st portion of your advice "(Start -> Run -> "cmd") and enter the command: ipconfig /all"******Everything is the same except for DNS Setvers. My DNS servers are different on each computer.***** for the 2nd part of your advice "Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections (Tab) -> Lan Settings"******On the computer that works Automatically Detect Setting is Checked. I tried checking in on the computer that does not work and it does not solve the problem.*****

Download and install Malwarebytes (freeware version for home users only), update definitions and run in safe mode. Disable other security software whilst you are doing scans. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Download and run SuperAntiSpyware (Free Edition) http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html Given the situation with regard to internet access you may have to run the programmes from another computer. You could put the drive from the computer in an external drive casing and connect to the computer you have downloaded malwarebytes to. Event Type: WarningEvent Source: MsiInstallerEvent Category: NoneEvent ID: 1001This error is a failed Quicken update. I could comment on the others but getting your internet access restored has to be your priority.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

A problem with the DNS servers could cause your problem. The fact that your computer is being assigned a IP address on the correct subnet tends to indicats that the basic TCP/IP protocol is working properly (either that or you've correctly assigned a manual IP address). If you do have a DNS problem, then you should be able to successfully ping using IP address instead of the server name. If this is the problem, then bringing up a command prompt (Start -> Run -> "cmd") window and entering the following command should work: ping 66.102.7.104while the following would not work: ping www.google.com.The failure of the following command would also indicate a DNS problem: nslookup www.google.comIt is disturbing that your machines have different DNS servers indicated. The router should assign the same DNS server to all clients. Try going to: Control Panel -> Network Connections then right-click on your network interface and select "Properties" In the window labeled "This connection uses the following items", scroll down to the bottom and double-click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" Ensure that the box labeled "Obtain DNS Server address automatically" is checked (preferred). Alternatively, you can click on "Use the following DNS server addresses" and set the address to agree with one of your other machines that work (lesser preferred).Regarding the "Internet Options" control panel, "Automatically Detect Settings" is unnecessary and could cause additional delays. I recommend that you un-check this box. I only mentioned this setting in case you had accidentally specified a proxy server.Hope this Helps and Good Luck, JW

I have 3 other computers in the house all working off the same ISP & router (wireless & wired).Even when I reroute the same network cable, that is usually ran to the computer which is not working, to another computer - it works fine. Don't you think that means it's certainly a problem on the computer?
