Network Icon red X - NlaSvc service failed, Cant get DHCP service to start, unable to access wireless
Hi Everyone,I have seen this question posted many times already but no definitive solution thus far has worked for me, I am hoping to be able to resurrect some help and advice on this. I really do not want to reformat and recover my laptop, but I guess I might have to if no solution can be found.I am receiving the same error as described here. "The NlaSvc Service is failing to start. The symptoms on the desktop are a red "X" on the network icon. (The pop-up message is "Connection status: unknown The dependency service or group failed to start." However, the network connection is working OK, but Vista is apparently unable to recognize the network." error and when I check Event Viewer, the DHCP service has not started and cannot start because of Error 5: Access or Permission denied. I am unable to connet at all to any website, I get a timeout or resolving host error. I am posting from another computer.I have tried swapping out the nlasvcc.dll file, along with winint, but nothing has resulted after successful swaps. What gets me is that I do not run Trend Micro, or Norton Anti Virus at all on my Asus V2S laptop. This problem just started to occur randomly one day after connecting as usual to all of my usual websites on my university's network.I have also followed the steps described here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943996But one thing I did notice, I was unable to run the "check names" portion of the instructions for NT SERVICe \DHCP or Trusted Installer , as described below, they do not seem to appear in the list of object names to choose:For the DHCP Client service, the issue may occur if the "NT Service\DHCP" account does not have the necessary permissions for the following keys:Registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcppermission needed: Query value, Create value, Enumerate Subkeys, Notify, Read ControlRegistry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp\Configurationspermission needed: Full Control, ReadFor the "Diagnostic Policy Service" service, the issue may occur when the account Trustedinstaller is missing the permissions for the key below:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DPS\Parameterspermission needed: Full Control, Read Is there anything that I can do to allow me to access wireless again, short of reformatting?! This problem occurred just before running an SP1 update, I rolled back to pre SP1 and post SP1 and neither worked to fix the problem. I have also run the sfcscan now to no avail. I am running on Windows Vista BusinessAny help would be appreciated!

Hi, Thank you for the update. If everything worked before, a quick solution is to restore the system back to the previous status when the issue didnt occur with System Restore. (Note: Performing a system restore may cause the loss of the current system settings; therefore, before doing this, please make sure that the system restore point is not too old and set a restore point for the current status.) Regarding the message The dependency service or group failed to start., I would like to suggest checking the dependencies of the Network Location Awareness (NLA) service one by one to see if any error receives and post the information about which service fails and what error is received to the thread. Here are the NLA service dependencies: Network Store Interface service NSI Proxy service Remote Procedure Call service (RPC) DCOM Server Process Launcher TCP/IP Protocol driver Please find these services and see if they are set to Automatic and started (if not, double click and on the next screen you can set Startup Type to Automatic and click on the Start button for that service.) If any of these cannot be started, check their Dependencies tab to see if other services exist which need to be started. Please also remove and reinstall the drivers for you NICs. If there is a new version released, please also try it. Hope this helps. Thanks.
