Network Not Working
I just downloaded 7rc and it went in over my Vista with no problem but now that I have it on my brand new Gateway Laptop I can no longer access the Internet at all. I am not all that smart with explaining things and I guess maybe I should not have downloaded the 7 without being more knowledge but I heard so many great things about it I wanted to try it out. I just wondered if anyone could jump in and help me out so that I can understand what is wrong? It shows my internet as a strong connection but it just will not connect at all. I know it is working because everyone else in this house is on line with there wireless laptops but me. Did anyone else have a problem with there being no connection at all on there Laptop after downloading 7rc? Can anyone help me please I would really like to play and learn this new operating system but I need to be able to go online???

Kitten2,At least one person that I know of had his Internet Explorer install with proxy settings turned on. Can you check that? With Internet Explorer open, press alt to make the menu bar appear. Then go into Tools, Internet options. When that window opens, go to the connections tab, then click on the 'Lan Settings' button. When that window opens, make sure that 'Automatically detect' is checked and nothing else.

Kitten,Check in the device manager that the wireless drivers are loaded and error free. Then check that your computer is in the same workgroup so check the name which can be done by right clicking computer on the start menu, properties, check the name of your network.Does your laptop show up in the router settings? What make and model is the router? What error message if any is on the network iconon the task bar?

Ok this morning I took my laptop over to my Netgear Router and pluged in it directly and guess what it went right on line. As soon as I unplugged it I lost connection to the Internet. So it seems that even though all the other Laptops in this house can go on line wireless the one I installed the 7rc with will no longer og on line. What could the problem be? I just hate giving up and going back to Vista but if I cannot get onto the Internet like I could before I guessb I will have to. I do thank you all for your help......

Hello Kitten2,There are a few more possible solutions before going back to Windows Vista. Go into Network and Sharing Center and select the option on the left, change adapter settings. In this window right click your wireless adapter and disable it then do the same to re-enable it. Once re-enabled give it a minute to negotiate with the router. If that doesn't get you connected right-click the wireless device and select properties then select Internet Protocolversion 4 and select properties. In this window select, Use the following IP address.Enter the following~Ip Address: 192.168.1.110(any number between 110-130 should be fine)Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.1Click OK and close the properties window. If that does not create a connection then my next suggestion would be to reset the IP address settings back to Obtain an IP address automatically and power cycle your router by unplugging the power cord for about 30 seconds. This will cause the router to reset.-Scott

As soon as I unplug it I lose connection I have tried everything I have been told to try and nothing has worked. I just do not know what to do what good is it to have a wireless laptop when I cannot access the net I am so dissapointed because other then the Network issue I reallu like the 7 operating system.....

Scott I am sorry but you are speaking with a lady that does not understand much of anything. I know I should not have done this download because it is for people that can do all sorts of things with a PC. But I was reading how cool 7 was and that it was a simple download and so I went and did it. I never thought about problems that could happen and that is my own fault. I do really like the 7 and would love to keep it on my Laptop. But I need to be able to get online and so I have to decide what to do next. This is my fault and I am taking the blame I was hoping that it would have been a easy fix that I could have understood but I can see now that I do not understand. I thank you for trying to help me out it was very nice of you. Maybe I will be able to buy it when it is fixed and released in Oct. if they still plan on that being the release date thanks again for your help sincerely,K.

Kitten2,OK. Which Gateway do you have? We are going to try 2 things.1. We are going to download the Windows XP driver for that network card from the Gateway site (if we can find it) and then we are going to uninstall the network card and install the Windows XP driver in compatibility mode. Then....2. We will make sure we do not let the card fall asleep (save power mode). So, if you can go to the Gateway site and try to find your driver, then I will sleep (it's after midnight here, and I have a day job)... and we will pick this up tomorrow unless someone else jumps in to help you. If you cannot find your driver, I will help there tomorrow also.In the mean time, there are several things you can do to help... 1. right click on the network icon down by the time and choose troubleshoot problems and see if that helps you.2. Read this thread. There are a bunch of people that have wireless problems and you might be able to try some of the things that they did.3. One of the important ones might be to remove IPv6. If you right click the network icon by the time and choose open network and sharing center, then in the left pane, click on change adapter settings, then right click on the one that shows your wireless adapter and choose properties. Click on the item in the list that says 'Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)' and then click uninstall. then ok your way out and reboot to see if that worked. While in that 'change adapter settings' window, across the top of the screen are a bunch of other options, one of which is diagnose this connection... you might try that also.

Hi wow that sounds like a lot of scary work lol. I had Vista that I put the 7 over so going over to look for XP drivers is ok? Anyway you need to go to bed and get some sleep and I think I am going to just try and relax for awhile. We can pick it all up tomorrow if possable besides I think I have to build up some courage anyway to do what you are asking. So go get some sleep and I thank you again for your help thanks again sleep well night.....

Hi Kitten2 The easy thing to try is to hookup the laptop to the router and run windows update apply the updates and test once moreAnd it is not hard to uninstall / reinstall the driverstry windows update first and if that does not fix it then you can move to next step.http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/dlcenter.asp here you enter in your gateway info and they have util which will scan the pc for driver updates.in device manager uninstall the Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter and then run the gateway scan and see what it finds.

Hi Kitten2,"Yen yes I did try to get back on line using the network icon in the tray and that did not work"Could you please elaborate a bit more about how you tried the wireless connection? Like click on the network tray icon, choose the network name of your router, then what happened? Did you see any error message? Thanks,Yan

Can you tell us the exact model please it is written on the bottom of the laptop. Some Gateway laptops have two switches to turn on LWan. I would not start changing drivers yet as there are no errors in the device manager.

Is your router using MAC filtering? Since you can connect with a direct cable connection, my first thought would be that your MAC address is not recognized by the router. ------- Frank

Frankapat,She was able to use it in Windows Vista, so I don't think that's it.Kitten2,Come back and work on this more with us...

Hi everyone first off I would like to thank you all for trying to help me out and secone I am sorry this whole thing has just left me feeling so confused I had to get away from it all. I have tried everything that has been sugested and it remains the same for me. I can get on line as long as I plug in directly to my Netgear Router. But when I am not pluged in it losses connection when I click on the icon in the try I get no internet access. And that I can troubleshoot problems and I let it do that and what it says is..... Windows can't communicate with the divice resource (primary DNS server) whatever that means the modl is a M/2626U The other thing is when I look at the pics of the internet connection it shows my Pc the house in the middle as it should be but then it shows a red X and the internet globe is shaded out. I know I am not using terms that you all use but I am not a pc expert I am just a dumb lady who should never have done something like this but wanted to give it a try. I do thank you all so much so that is the new update it is strange that if I am plugged in I can get Internet anyway thanks again..................K.

Kitten2,Welcome back. Yes, this is all very confusing. It's even harder when we don't have things right in front of us. I found a driver made this year for your wireless card. Maybe we can try it? Take this slow, step by step.1. Click on this link. There is a 'Download' button at the bottom of the first big box. Click that and download it to your desktop.2. Right-click (hold it) and drag the file a little to the side, then let go the right-click. A little menu will open... pick the 'Extract to \...\xp3264-7.7.0.259-whql' option.3. Click on the Start Orb and type Device Manager and press enter. A new window will open.4. Click the little arrow next to 'Network Adapters' to open it up and you will see both network cards.5. Double click on the Atheros AR5B91 Wireless Network Adapter. This will open a new window...6. On this new window, click the 'Driver' tab.7. Click the 'Update Driver' button. This will open a new window. Click on the 'Browse my computer for driver software' option.8. The window will change, and there will be a 'Browse' button. Use that and point to the new folder on the desktop (should be named xp3264-7.7.0.259-whql) and click OK.9. Tell me what happens. :)

Can you check the WLan is switched on by the following. Q: How do I turn this notebook's wireless on and off? A: The wireless network switch located on the left side of this notebook turns both the optional wireless LAN and optional Bluetooth on and off. The wireless status indicator lights, when the wireless is turned on. When the wireless network switch is in the On position, you can press the Fn+F2 keys to turn the optional IEEE 802.11 wireless network radio on or off. Note: The switch must be turned on for the wireless LAN and Bluetooth function keys to work (Fn+F2 for wireless and Fn+F6 for Bluetooth). If you have turned on the wireless network switch and then used a function key to disable one of the functions, the option selected remains until the wireless network switch is turned on and the function key is once again used to change the setting. For example; if you have turned on the wireless network switch to enable the wireless LAN and Bluetooth, and then used the Fn+F6 function to disable the just the Bluetooth option, even after turning the wireless switch off and then back on, the Fn+F6 function key must be used to enable the Bluetooth option again. -----------------------------------Do you know if your wireless router is using security if so what type?
