Network and sleep problem
I have IBM workstation with Windows 7 Ent. RTM, joined in domain. I has onboard LAN card- Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet. I have disabled Ipv6.Problem: when computer wakes up from longer sleep about 20min. computer looses its domain network it shows me that I am in Unidentified network. I can see my domain in Notification area under Network only when I restart my computer. Supose all firewall rules which I had defined for Domain will not work in Unidentified network.

Have you enabled outbound filtering in the local firewall? Then you may have restricted too much traffic. When the computer wakes up from sleep it must be able to logon to the domain (on the System level) to recognize the Domain network. If it is not able to logon, the network remains unidentified. Can you tell how you configured outbound traffic on the firewall?Ray

I have had the same problem with both my home wireless network and my vodafone mobile broadband dongle. After waking from sleep mode my laptop will not connect to either even though it is saying it is trying. I've tried this with firewalls on and off. It made no difference. I have a Toshiba Satellite pro with Windows 7 and running BitDefender 2009.

I is not the same. I have connection but it showing that it is unidentified network.

These rules are all outbound filtering rules. The default allows all outbound traffic and blocks all inbound traffic except DHCP.In order to identify the domain network you need to allow the following outbound traffic:DNS (TCP/UDP 53)LDAP (TCP/UDP 389)Allow all outbound traffic for the following services:Netlogon Service (TCP/UDP)Workstation Service (TCP/UDP)Ray

Do You mean to create 4 manual rules? But in my outbound rules thereare no such rules which disable these connections.
August 13th, 2009 9:37am

Well if you blocked outbound traffic in the public profile you have to manually define the rules to allow this traffic. Otherwise the system will not be able to identify the domain network. When you implement to allow this outbound traffic, you will probrably end up with 8 rules as there will be separate rules for UDP and TCP traffic. And yes you have to manually create these rules. Microsoft unfortunately did not provide standard rules to enable domain logon when outbound traffic is blocked in the public profile.Ray

Hi, Thank you for you posts. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Please ensure that the NIC driver is compatible with Windows 7 and is up-to-date. 2. Disable Save Power function of the NIC 1) Click Start, right click on Computer and choose Properties. 2) Click Device Manager. 3) Navigate to your NIC, right click on it and choose Properties. 4) Choose Power Management tab. 5) Please uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." 6) Restart the computer and check if it works. 3. When the issue occurs, please check how it works if you disable and enable the NIC. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Ray - Firewall rules did not helped.Nicholas - Power management also did not helped. Only after reenabling the NIC. But maybe it is that I forgot to reboot. Thanks

HiI restarted my PC, but no luck after waking up I got Unindefied network and no Internet. I disabled and enabled the NIC and got positive result. So where can be the problem? Please help.
August 13th, 2009 3:01pm

Did you try disabling the firewall to check if this is causing your issues? If it is you can log blocked traffic to see what traffic is keeping your system from identifying the network.Ray

Where can I log that traffic?
August 13th, 2009 3:20pm

I disabled firewall wnt to sleep mode, woke up and no results. It appears randomly sometimes it is working sometimes not, but reenabling the NIC allways worked. So problem is not in Firewall.

Start Windows Firewall with Advanced SecurityRight click Windows Firewall with Advanced Security in the upper left and select PropertiesSelect the Public Profile tabClick Customize... in the Logging sectionNow you enable logging of dropped packets and define where to store the logfile. You can define separate logfiles per profile. In your case it is best to focus on the Public profile.Have you checked if disabling he firewall solves the issue?Ray

I enabled also Firewall loging on Public profile. There is no source ip with my PC. Destination IP is my where I tried to connect from server to my PC.

Hi, Thank you for updating. At this time, please also try the following: Note: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, please perform a full-system backup. You can also use the Last Known Good Configuration startup option if you encounter problems after manual changes have been applied. 1. Click Start, type regedit in the Search box, and then press ENTER. 2. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet 3. Under the Internet key, double-click EnableActiveProbing, and then in Value data, type: 0 4. Click OK and restart the computer. Meanwhile, please also check your proxy settings. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

From device manager>select the nic>properties>power management tab>uncheck allow computer toturn off this device to save power>OK>close out. Allow it to sleep or put it in that state and test. The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

I also have a similar issue. I have installed Windows 7 on 2 Dell machines 1 XPS laptop and 1 Optiplex 755 Both are reporting no internet access. YET, both have internet access and LAN access. I have turned off the power functions of the NIC but with no results. 2 different machines same result.

I have turned off the firewall to eliminate that issue.

I've done the NIC thing, made sure the driver was up to date, altered the registry and turned off the firewall and it still does the same. Everything worked just fine with XP pro but this has only happened since installing Windows 7.

HiI don't understand.MY actions. I inserted additional 3Com NIC but did not connected it.I tested all possible variations with Disabling NIC sleep parameter, Firewall rules and manyaly setted proxy. All worked. I started remove one by one and again it worked. So I am confused with results. My next step will be to remove additional 3Com nic.Network status from Unidentified to Mydomain.com change in 40sec.thanks

I don't know if this is related.... but when I would go into power saving mode with Vista, it would come back with a default gateway of 0.0.0.0 and at first a reboot was the only way to fix this, until I used the command ` route delete 0.0.0.0 ` you can check your route table with ` route print ` Hope this helps.
