Network discovery not working across VLANs
Hello, I am running a network where we have 5 separate sites on the same network. We have a different VLAN for each site and a layer three switch at each site to route traffic in/out. We are running primarily Windows 7 machines at all of our
locations, with a few scattered XP machines but this is irrelevent to the problem... When I go toStart > Computer and select Network in the lower left, I can only see other computers/devices within the same building.
However, when I choose "SearchActive Directory" near the top left and do a blank search on Computers, I see all 2050 of them. And of course I have ping/tracert connectivity between all of them as well. This is
the case at all five of our buildings, and I need to be able to see at minimum our servers (located in the main building) from each site because certain software we use needs to access the CA server to pull certificates. It does not let us manually map,
but only choose from the computers that are visible in the Network menu.
Does anybody know of this problem and how I can make visible the devices at other sites? I have looked at the ACLs and there are no restrictions on any of the file sharing ports. I can't think of anything else at this point, because all other
connectivity is good. It is only in the Network menu that they are not visible.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

That's probably a browser/Netbios problem. You should troubleshoot the
browser service using a Windows XP PC. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188305/en-us and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001/en-us and
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc737661%28v=ws.10%29 .
Of course you need a correctly configured WINS server, too (or LMHOSTS
files), but that alone does not help with browsing problems.
If your servers are all W2008 or later, you need to explicitly enable
the browser service as it is disabled by default on those servers. Also
each segment must have a working master browser. If you have a mixed
environment - especially with Linux/Samba servers - your browser
experience may be limited, too.
In a setup of more than 2000 computers like yours, the browser service
tends to get unreliable in any way. I'd incline to use the AD search
capabilities instead.

Sorry for the late response... Yes, we have all drivers directly from the vendor website. We have no issues with anything other than this specific function, I am having a hard time determining whether it is a Windows based problem or a networking
problem.

Thanks for the information, I will look into the links you provided. So far, all of the Microsoft support pages I have gone to in searches have not addressed the specific issue that I stated above. And like I stated, we cannot use the AD
search for a specific software we are using, it only allows us to search for the CA from computers/devices listed in the
Network menu. So as of right now, the only computers we can install this software on are computers in the same building as our CA.
If you have any other ideas, I would be grateful to hear them!

If you know the name of the servers you need, you can just enter the
name of the server you want to connect to in the address(location)
field to get to that resource, if you are e.g. using the Win7 explorer
interface to see the network (neighbourhood).
