Network files opening as read-only
Setup: Vista desktop with printer attached and XP laptop. User wants to be able to access his Word documents residing on the desktop from his laptop. The Word documents are in his Documents folder. When he opensa document, it opens as read-only and he is unable to save any changes. Similarly, he is unable to copy any files into the Documents or Pictures folder. He signs on with the same userid and password on each machine. If thedocument is put in the Public folder thenit can be accessedand saved. It is not read-only. Any ideas what setting is incorrect? Further, he cannot write to the printer on the desktop from the laptop, even though it is visible. When I try the same test on my machines (XP and Win7) Ido not run into the read-only situation. Thanks

As the Vista machine is sharing with an XP machine, you may need to install the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) responder on the XP machine so that the computer shows up in Vistas network map, get it here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4F01A31D-EE46-481E-BA11-37F485FA34EA&displaylang=en

Thanks for the hint, but the XP machine is already at service pack 3. The link you provided states that the fix is for SP 2, and since it's not my machine, I didn't want to try to install an older fix (which should be incorporated into SP 3) onto a newer version. Plus, I checked and the XP machinealready shows up in the Vista network map, and I can access files that are on the Vista machine from the XP machine. I can even edit and save documents if they are in the Public folder on the Vista machine. The problem is that anything I open thatis not in the Public folder opens up as read-only.
