Network with ethernet crossover for Vista and XP
Hello, I am trying to connect my new Vista to my old XP SP2 using a crossover cable. I have been to numerous help sites and have changed all the settings to what is suggested. I have allowed for file sharing, firewalls disabled, etc. I just want to move files from my XP to Vista. On the Vista I can see my XP under the network folder, however, it is treating it as media. When I double click it, it opens media player. I don't understand this. When I ping the XP from Vista it seems to be fine. When I ping the Vista from XP, it says the request time out. When I run ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt on Vista I get: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : DrAndy-PC Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1D-09-8B-1E-33 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::acbc77a:cc2676f %9(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.198.0.2(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 6: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Teredo Tunneling Pseudo- Interface Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 02-00-54-55-4E-01 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 7: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Microsoft ISATAP Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::200:5efe: 192.198.0.2%10(Preferred) Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 9: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Microsoft 6to4 Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Temporary IPv6 Address. . . . . . : 2002:c0c6:2::c0c6:2(Preferred) Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled Here is the result of ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt for the XP: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Dellbert Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0B-DB-0E-61-97 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.198.0.1 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : Here is the result of netconfig: Server Name \\DELLBERT Server Comment My Computer Software version Windows 2002 Server is active on NwlnkIpx (000000000001) NwlnkNb (000bdb0e6197) NetbiosSmb (000000000000) NetBT_Tcpip_{C3587F11-16AE-4A52-B54F-F0D1EEA3CEA6} (000bdb0e6197) Server hidden No Maximum Logged On Users 5 Maximum open files per session 16384 Idle session time (min) 15 The command completed successfully.

Hi, I suggest that you temporarily turn off the firewall and antivirus on both machines, access the share folder on the Windows XP machine by using the UNC path:On the Windows Vista machine, click Start, type \\192.168.0.1\ShareFolder in the Start Search box, and press Enter. Hope it helps.
