Networking 4 Computers together; Special Access by 1 computer to a 5th computer in another workgroup.
Hey everyone, I had a question about networking related to sharing files and folders in XP. I have 4 business computers on one network. The computer in the CEO's office needs special access to a 5th computer connected to the same router/switch but on a different work group. I want to keep the CEO's computer connected to the main network as well as have access to the files and folders on the 5th computer. Is there a way to do this? If so how can I do it? Its a small business but he needs access to certain files and programs on both networks.1 person got this answerI do too

Why is the 5th computer in a different workgroup? Workgroups don't provide any type of security or isolation. A computer in any workgroup can discover and access a computer in any workgroup. To access another computer, regardless of what workgroup either computer is in, type the other computer's name in the Start > Run box in this format: \\computerBoulder Computer Maven Microsoft Most Valuable Professional

I just needed some kind of seperation and it seemed like workgroup was the only way to seperate it on the same network. It isn't readily available if someone where just casually looking I suppose. Anyhow, if you have a better recommendation I am happy to take any help I can get. I am not much of a networking guru.

If I understand correctly, you want only the CEO's computer to have access to the 5th computer. If the 5th computer has Windows XP Professional, you can disable simple file sharing. Then, only a user who has an account on the 5th computer will be able to access it. Ron Lowe and I have written a web page with full details: Windows XP Professional File Sharing .Boulder Computer Maven Microsoft Most Valuable Professional
