Networking and Windows
Hi all
I have a Windows Vista laptop accessing internet via Linksys wireless router(WRT54G).
(1) I had a problem trying to to ping my router which results in the default gateway can't be found, yet I am able to
access the internet but at a very slow speed.
(2) My windows kept shutting down with an error problem, prompting me to download a batch file from the net to resolve
the problem. I clicked on the link as directed and install the 32-bit Vista version of mine, halfway it says "Not
compatible"
(3) I had problem accessing hotmail and msn websites, although i am able to log in to Msn messenger as well as
accessing other websites. (even though I had allowed both "hotmail & msn" thru my Trend Micro Internet Security
firewall)
I hope someone will give me a remedy asap. Thanks!

Hi,
Thank you for your post.
To resolve the issues more efficiently, I suggest creating three threads for those issues respectively.
In this thread, I will focus on the first issue, which is I had a problem trying to ping my router which results in the default gateway can't be found, yet I am able to access the internet but at a very slow speed. since it is a networking issue.
Regarding the second issue, please provide more detailed information on the error and the file. I would be appreciated it if you can capture a screenshot of the error message for further research.
For the third issue, please create a new thread in Windows Vista IE.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in advance.
Now, lets focus on the first issue.
Firstly, please confirm: How do you connect to the Internet? Are you using a dial-up connection? If so, which network device is used to dial up? The Windows Vista machine or the router?
The ping issue can occur if the router blocks ICMP packets. Thus, I suggest checking the setting on the router.
In addition, please run the following command on the Windows Vista machine for further research:
1. Ping <ip address of the router>
2. Ipconfig /all
After that, please copy and paste the result in this thread.
Ive also listed some possible causes that can result in slow connection speed for your reference:
Malware.
The wireless signal is not strong enough.
Some third party services/programs conflicts.
Firewall/filter on the Router.
As a result, please refer to the following steps for troubleshooting:
Scan for viruses.
Please try to connect to the router through wired connection.
Please refer to the following KB article and perform a Clean Boot on the machine:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us
Temporarily disable all firewall rules/filters on the Router.
Contact your ISP to check the network speed.
Hope it helps. Have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Joson Zhou
