New desktop won't acquire IP address from Modem
My friend recently purchased a new desktop with Windows 8. I set it at my house for her: installed antivirus software from ISP provider, activated her license for Office 2013, and transferred her data from the old desktop. I also created a profile for her and enabled the admin account. There were no problems connecting to the internet and downloading the software.
When I took the desktop to her house and connected it to the modem, it would not acquire an IP address. I made sure it was configured to acquire an IP automatically. Is there a patch/update I need to install to resolve this problem?  She has a Docsis 3 modem from Comcast. Thanks. Joseph

Can she power off and on the modem? (maybe there are no free ip-addresses in the dhcp scope on the modem)

Try it with a (different) network cable. (is the led on the NIC blinking if cable is connected?)

Did you do the obvious things like rebooting the computer and modem/router at the same time?

Did you try disabling (may need removed) the malware app to see if that is blocking it.

Can she see the router from the pc?

Please run tracert answers.microsoft.com and post the results (run it from an elevated command prompt)

Please open network & sharing and make a snip of the setup and put it in your next post

1. You can test modem with another computer. Go to the configuration menu and find out if DHCP is configured correctly.

2. You can make release and renew

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

3. Try to do this with firewall disabled to avoid possible port blocking.

Alternatively you cn use static IP assigment (on the same subnet as modem is configured.) Set DG to modem IP and DNS, something like 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 .

Yes I did try a power reset on the modem, and a different network cable. It still wouldn't acquire IP address. But at least I eliminated those as possible causes. I was a little suspicious of the automated activation process. So I called Comcast and finally spoke to a live person. They did a reset and activation again from their office. Now it works fine. Thanks for your help.

I tried connecting my laptop to the modem, it couldn't get an IP address either.  I was a little suspicious of the automated activation process over the phone when I connected the modem for the first time. So I called Comcast again and finally spoke to a live person. They did a reset and activation again . Now it works fine. Thanks for your help.
