Not Connecting to Preferred Networks Configured via Group Policy
I have Windows 7 installed on a Dell Latitude D830 system. Our Active Directory pushes two preferred wireless network configurations to laptops, both SSIDs are hidden/not broadcasted. Our group policy does not allow re-ordering, configuring, etc. of those preferred wireless network configurations. Our specific location no longer uses the first (in order within Manage Wireless Networks) wireless network connection, only the second WLAN connection. For Windows XP systems, they successfully auto connect (bypassing the first and connecting to the second). However, our test Windows 7 systems are not auto connecting to the second WLAN connection (they do not bypass the first to connect to the second).Windows 7 test systems can usethe Dell Wireless LAN Utility to switch to the second WLAN connection, manually. This is not ideal, we want this automated like our Windows XP systems. What could be causing this behavior? I am not aware of a Group Policy, reg key, or any other setting in Windows 7 that would make these test systems behave differently than Windows XP system.

Hi, Since the first wireless network connection in Manage Wireless Networks is not connected automatically, please try the following: 1. Go to Network and Sharing Center. 2. Click Manage wireless networks. 3. Double click on the wireless connection which you preferred. 4. In its properties, select Connect automatically when this network is in range and click OK. 5. Meanwhile, please also check the second WLAN connection and ensure that Connect automatically when this network is in range is not checked or just remove this profile. Meanwhile, I would like to share the following with you for your reference: Connecting to Wireless Networks with Windows Vista Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
