Offline files not working after software installed.
We have a Windows Server 2008 domain with a folder redirection GPO that stores the desktop and documents folder for users on a server share. For our laptop users, when they are disconnected from our WAN, their desktop and documents folder contents
are cached.
Recently, I packaged some software use Wise Package Studio. I just followed a guide, and I know next to nothing about properly packaging software. The software packages installed OK, but they created a problem:
Domain users without folder redirection get a temporary profile each time they log in.
Domain users with folder redirection work fine while on the WAN, but when their laptops can't reach the server share for the folder redirection, nothing is cached and they are unable to save any files to the desktop or documents folder. Those two folders
don't even exist on c:\users\username\
Before we started using my repackaged software, they would be able to save files and then the files would sync when they reconnected to the WAN. What's wrong?

Hi,
First, please check if the offline file settings correctly.

You may also boot in

I followed the step-by-step guide, and in the GPO under user configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Offline Files -> Administratively Assigned Offline Files I set the user profile share \\server\home\%username%
Still, when I disconnect from the WAN, I get a Network Error 0x80070035 - Windows Cannot access \\server\home\%username%\desktop - the network path was not found.
And, I can't save to the desktop or documents folder while disconnect from the WAN.
I tried clean boot, but the issue persists. I've even reimaged the PC without the software I repackaged but I'm still having a problem.

UPDATE: I tried logging in with a different user account while on the WAN, then logged off, disconnected from the WAN, and logged back in. It worked for this other user account.
What could I look for in a particular profile that would cause this?

Hi,
Please take the steps in the following KB article to re-initialize the offline files cache and database:
How to re-initialize the offline files cache and database
Please take the steps in the
Method 2 or Let me fix it myself.
Also, according to your description, this issue can be caused by the corruption of the shared user desktop folder in the server. Please
check if the desktop and documents folder for users on the server share were modified. If this is the case, I think you may need to post a new thread in
Windows Server Forum for discussion.

Sabrina

I apologize for not responding sooner, but I was out on vacation.
The issue turned out to be the cache setting on the shared folder.
I was troubleshooting the issue using different user accounts from different locations and found the the problem only occurred for people at one of our locations (in otherwords, it was either a problem with that location's file server, or the GPO for that
locations OU).
After comparing the folder redirection GPO for that location to others that were working and not finding any differences, we began looking at the permissions on the shared folder. The folder permissions were also identical to those at locations where
we were not having any problems, but we did find a difference in the cache settings.
On the shared folder PROPERTIES -> SHARING -> ADVANCED SHARING -> CACHING was set to "Files or programs from the shared will not be available offline." We changed this setting to "Only the files and programs that the users specify will be
available offline" and this instantly resolved the issue.
Thanks for your time and assistance, Sabrina - it was greatly appreciated!
