Outlook Express 6 sends but leaves message in outbox with errors but no error message
OK, I've been getting some funny things happening lately with Outlook Express 6. When I send an email, it sends OK but stays in my outbox and flags up an error which reads "Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details." When I click on the errors tab it is absolutely empty, no error codes, nothing! It is really difficult because for ages, I didn't realise that the messages were sending, so kept bombarding people with the same message. It was only when I began cc'ing myself on the messages that I realised they were getting through, even though it was giving an error message and the message was still in my outbox. If anyone has any ideas as to how I can resolve this, I'd be very grateful, as the support site only deals with errors where there is an error code.ThanksLotus49

Go to File | Identities and set up a new Identity (which will give you an uncorrupt message store) and add your accounts and see if they work okay in that Identity. If so, then use File | Import | Messages to get them from the older Identity. Also see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 as some 3rd party program could be the culprit. steve <Lotus49> wrote in message news:Email removed for privacy...OK, I've been getting some funny things happening lately with Outlook Express 6. SteveMany thanks. I did what you suggested and it worked fine...for a while. Then the errors started coming back, so perhaps it is a piece of 3rd party software. I will check out that OEhelp site you suggested.RegardsMichael

Something keeps corrupting your Outbox, and or, Sent Items.Move most of your messages out of the Inbox and then create new Outbox and Sent Items folders after you move any messages you wish to save to a local folder you create.Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX files for the Outbox & Sent Items and delete them. New ones will be created automatically when you open OE.After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often.Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.General precautions for Outlook Express:Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption.Information about the maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903095Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for loss of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your emailhttp://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htmNote that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program and reinstall in Custom Mode and uncheck e-mail scanning when the option arises. Compact often as specified above. And backup often.Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB Freeware)http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx Bruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

In addition to what Bruce posted, you might also consider setting up a new Identity (File | Identities) as that will give you a clean, non-corrupt message store and then you can import from the older Identity. steve <Lotus49> wrote in message news:Email removed for privacy...SteveMany thanks. BruceMany thanks for your comprehensive answer, you have given me plenty to be getting on with!Scanning through your post, the one thing that jumps out at me is your comment about the size of my inbox. I have been a *bit* lax on filing messages in folders, with the result that I have over 10,000 emails in my inbox...suspect that may be upsetting the system! Guess I will have to spend a few days deleting and filing the mails in my inbox...RegardsMichael

Steve,I did actually create a new identity and it seemed to work OK but I guess the problems were the same because I copied all 10,000 emails in my inbox across to the new ID...doh!RegardsMichael

If you feel the need to keep so many messages, there are a couple of options for storing them. You could create yet another identity for the sole purpose of archiving. Create a number of folders, chronologically perhaps, and store messages in them. Since it is for archiving only and not active use, you still want to back it up but corruption will be less likely with messages in user created folders and not being accessed constantly.Another option is storing the messages out of OE altogether. You can store them any place you want, but I'll use the Desktop as an example.Right click on the Desktop | New | Folder. Create as many as needed, and for now, put them on the left side of the Desktop.Open OE and drag the window to the right enough to see the folder you created on the Desktop. Open the folder in OE and click on one message. Ctrl+A will highlight them all. Left click on the messages and drag them to the folder on the Desktop. You can also be selective by holding the Ctrl key and just highlight certain messages and then drag them to the folder on the Desktop.Once you confirm they are in these folders, you can delete them from OE if you wish, and follow up with a Compact All Folders.Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. You may find that messages with the same subject get appended, probably with (1), (2), etc. One of these programs may be of use to you. Have a look and decide.DBXtract:http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspxOEX:http://www.oehelp.com/OEX/Default.aspx Bruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

I would empty the inbox and put all those messages in other folders. Its not good to have a dbx file that is much larger than a few hundred megabytes as they become more susceptible to corruption the larger they get. steve <Lotus49> wrote in message news:Email removed for privacy...Steve,I did actually create a new identity and it seemed to work OK but I guess the problems were the same because I copied all 10,000 emails in my inbox across to the new ID...doh!RegardsMichael
