PC Problem Error 4609, Most Auto Services off, No System Restore, No Network Connection
Win XP SP3:
I can't open an individual log item in application log.
It logs Error 4609 repeatedly.
System shows a network adapter but it doesn't show under network in control panel.
Most Auto Services are off...and they won't start.
I'm running a McAfee Viruscan Scan, then Stinger, and Malwarebytes.
(EDIT...Malwarebytes won't run...related to stopped services?...error is Runtime Error 32...failed to load control 'lvbalGrid' from vbalsgri6.ocs.)
What else can I do?
I use WSUS update system...and updates had just run on this PC. It hadn't updated in a few months.
EDIT: Device Manager appears normal.
I have another XP SP3 PC that has the same symptoms:
no network connection
won't run malwarebytes
no system restore
can't open individual event viewer items
many auto services are off
both started about April 21 when I released Windows Updates from WSUS server.
I have 2 more PCs that likely have the same problem.
Edit3: Memory and CPU utilization in both PCs is very low...nothing going on....no network activity at all.

solved...I couldn't wait and had to call the excellent support....credit to MS Bus Support!
Mcafee Viruscan caused the problem by corrupting the windows\system32\svchost.exe file.
I fixed it by replacing the svchost.exe file with a known good one from xp sp3....and updating McAfee to latest dats.
Since copy and paste was dead, I had to use DOS or cmd.exe to copy the file from a usb drive.
