Permissions Fail
I am having a problem changing owner on a folder and the contained files located on a local shared network drive. I get "Accesed Denied" using the conventional Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit > change owner to .. I get access denied. And with DOS from an administrator command prompt: takeown /f S:\BackUp-Music\Recordings\AmbroseNew I get access denied When I try to change permissions I get: Advanced Security Settings For file name The program cannot open the required dialog box because it cannot determine wheather the computer named "externaldrive" is joined to a domain. Close the message and try again. Externaldrive is not a computer it is just an external drive. I think if I could get the permissions changed then i could change the owner.

I made a beginners mistake in trying to delete the "Bad Owner" files on my external drive. My ID was not administrator even though the description field said administrator. When I switched users to administrator I was able to delete the offending files. The problem arose when I used ROBOCOPY to backup music files to the external drive. Some of The files got an owner of nobody (Unix User\nobody) instead of Linux User,,, (EXTERNALDRIVE\everyone). On subsequent updates when ROBOCOPY encountered a bad owner it just quit with an error message. That gave rise to many hours that I spent in trying to change the owner. Frank C
