Poor Performance
I have a Lenovo T410 laptop that is about 1 month old. It came with Windows 7 Professional (64) pre-installed, however the performance was so slow I replaced it with the included Windows XP (32) OS. While this did improve the performance somewhat, it is still very poor. When opening a program, or executing tasks within a program, it lags for a very long time before performing the desired action, sometimes up to a couple of minutes. During these lags, the processor usage is low (normal idle), and the HDD light shows no activity and the status is “running”. The computer seems to be just sitting there. When the action finally does start, it seems to perform normally. Also, the settings between sessions are sometimes not saved, icons missing, different settings on programs or devices (mouse, screen brightness, etc.). It seems like I am always reconfiguring the settings. The internet response is slow, it takes a long time to access a web page. Again, it seems like the computer is just sitting there. My home page is a local html file on my hard drive, and it takes a long time to load it. During these lags, the internet icon in the tray, shows little activity. The internet speed test shows a relatively decent connection (13 Mb/s down, 2.5 Mb/s up). Running the T410 next to my old T60 for comparison (both on the same wireless connection), the T60 is much faster and performs much much better. Both the T60 and the T410 have the same programs installed, Windows XP SP3, and generally the same configuration. I kept the Windows 7 hard drive intact and installed Windows XP on a new hard drive, the same performance issues occur with either drive. I have tried the usual diagnostics - disabling multiple programs including the AV program, however these seem to make no difference in the performance. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? We are seeing the exact same problem on a number of our laptops. Once we installed windows search on top of XP SP3 we noticed the OS started to hang. What baffles me is that different applications hang at different times. Sometimes IE will hang and sometimes it won't. Sometimes I can get to task manager to kill the searchfilterhost.exe process and sometimes that is locked up too. I have noticed that as long as I can kill that process the laptop comes back to life instantly. I was starting to think this is some kind of hard drive controller driver issue. We have noticed that Ubuntu absolutely flies on these laptops. XP is about as fast as my 4 year old dell. Go figure.

Hi there, I am using this T410 for 3 months now; and at a verge of breaking into peices. There is some big mess with the design of this laptop. It is so slow; and all the symptoms mentioned above are also in my laptop. Somemore, I play video on the second screen; and it lags every few seconds... I noted the HDD light blinks longer; suspect it may be some Virtual memory setting, etc;;; and that is why I started searching... so I am not alone; is there any fix of this problem? Also the battery life is less than 2 hours... my 2 1/2 old Dell has 2+ hour battery life! My old Dell D630 with XP SP3 is perfoming faster than this lenovo t410.... I think someone cut corner somewhere in manufacturing process... My colleague on the other hands claims that lenovo t410 is working fine; and he enjoys longer battery life... suspect it is batch of BAD motherborads or something!!!
