Possible network/permission issue.
I just purchased a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 2 the other day and I'm having some issues connecting to it via CIFS from my desktop. When trying to navigate to my NAS from “Run” I get this message “A device attached to the system is not functioning “. I also had some other messages about permissions but I didn’t keep note what troubleshooting steps I took when i got that message. I spent a good amount of time on bing searching for others with similar symptoms to no avail. Since this is a new NAS I still have setup and tech support so I figured I would give them a call. I ended up spending about an hour and a half with a tech troubleshooting the issue. We came to the conclusion the issue has something to do with my computer/OS and not the NAS. I run Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I had reimaged my computer about 2 months ago with little to no configuration changes from the original installation. With the same image on my laptop I'm able to successfully connect to my NAS via CIFS. I have been comparing my network and security permissions on both desktop and laptop trying to figure out what the hell is the issue. While doing some more troubleshooting I found out I can’t access any shared files on my LAN from my desktop. From the start menu I click “Network”. I get a list of all the devices on my LAN. I’m able to see my Desktop, both my laptops, and my router but not my NAS. But when I click on any device I get a “\\<device name> is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the admin of the server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network provider name is invalid”. Even if I click on my current computer (Desktop) I get that message. On my other 2 laptops, when I go to “Network” I can see all my PC's, NAS, Router, and my Routers USB Readyshare. Both my laptops can also navigate to each of those devices with no problem. So the Netgear tech was right, it clearly is my desktop. If anyone has any idea what is wrong I would be very appreciative. If you are able to fix my issue I will send you $10 via Paypal for your time. I have Teamviewer if anyone would like to help using that. I was able to Ping the NETBIOS and IP of all my devices on my network. I'm also in the same homegroup as the rest of my computers. All my PC's run Windows 7 Router- Netgear WNDR3700v2

It can be caused by compatibility issue. Try to change some configurations in Windows 7 to make it backward compatibility. Change the default NTLM authentication level in Windows 7. Locate to the policy: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Then change the value to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”. If the issue persists, I suggest you disable SMBv2 in Windows 7.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
