Prefer Ethernet connection over WiFi
Hi there, I can't seem to find a solution to my problem. My laptop is connected via ethernet at work. At the same time Wifi is enabled (and I don't want to disable it via the HW switch due to several reasons). I would like that Win7 (professional) uses the much faster ethernet connection (1Gbps) but it always swtiches to Wifi (54 Mbps). In Adapters and Bindings I've set the Local Area Connection at the top and below is the Wireless Network Connection. In the Device manager I've set the Speed & Duplex of Ethernet to 1.0 Gbps Full duplex I've tried setting the metric of ethernet to 10 and the metric of the Wifi adapter to any higher value (20 or 400). But none of this seems to work. As soon as I reconnect WiFi via the HW switch it will use this connection. Is there anything I can try to to make this work? Or is anything Microsoft will do to fix this ? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here is answer from Superuser: Go to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings -> The hit Alt to get the menu and choose Advanced -> Advanced Settings. Then you can re-order your connections in that list. Although Windows should already automatically prefer your wired over your wireless connection. It chooses what adapter to use based on the lowest interface metric, and a wirelesss connection should have a higher metric than your wired. Run route print from the command prompt to see that

Hi Milos, thank you very much for the reply. Unfortunately, this is not working, although it should. As stated above: In Adapters and Bindings I've set the Local Area Connection at the top and below is the Wireless Network Connection. So, my ethernet connection is already the top-most hence it should use it as preferred, but it doesn't. Route print will also list my interfaces with ethernet on top with Metric 15 and the WiFi adapter with a Metric of 18. Yet still, the problem persists: I have working ethernet connection and when switching on the WiFi hardware switch it will connect via it. Thanks again for the reply, though. Any other suggestions?

Go to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings -> The hit Alt to get the menu and choose Advanced -> Advanced Settings. Then you can re-order your connections in that list. This dialog reorders network providers. This is something different and not relevant here. Although Windows should already automatically prefer your wired over your wireless connection. It chooses what adapter to use based on the lowest interface metric, and a wirelesss connection should have a higher metric than your wired. Run route print from the command prompt to see that Maybe this is because the default gateway still is on the wireless interface. If so, move it to the wired LAN. --pa
