Print Driver Installation Issue
Hello One of our client laptops running win 7 fails to install a network printer with the following error: Windows cannot connect to the printer. The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers. This laptop has the same image deployed to it as 125 other laptops that have no issues. I have tried setting the local computer policy - Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode drivers to disabled with no success. I have also tried installing the printer as a local printer and it fails with the following error: Windows can't install the Multi-Model Print Driver 2 kernel-mode print driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with teh version of windows you are running, contact the manufacturer. I can confirm that the drive is win 7 compatible as it installed on all the other laptops and I checked on the print server that the driver is Type 3 - User Mode Any assistance with getting this printer install would be greatly appreciated Thanks William Hickson

Hi, According to the error message, the issue should be caused by the printer driver. What is the model of the printer? NT 4.0 driver is not compatible with Windows 7. Please update your printer driver to the latest version. Or you can contact printer manufacturer for the driver. As you have disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode drivers on local policy, you can also disable the GP on printer server: Default Domain Controller Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Printers / Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode drivers. Also you can try to follow method 2 to install a non-Kernel mode driver locally for a remote printer server: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282011 Hope that helps. No it is not. The driver version is correct as it works on every other win 7 desktop (over 600) and laptop (125) in our organisation. The suggestions in kb 282011 did not work either.

Hi, There’s a KB for this error message: Windows cannot connect to the printer. The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931719 If it didn’t help, try to open “Print Management”, and delete all drivers of printers and install the driver again for test. Hope that helps. Regards, Leo Huang Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, The first thing that you need to share a printer is to set up the options in the ‘Control Panel’. You could get a menu on right clicking the ‘Printer’ icon in the ‘Control panel’. From there, you need to select the ‘Sharing’ option. You also need to make sure that you have enabled the ‘Printer sharing’ option in the network card properties. To connect a printer to the network, you need to set an IP address for your printer. If you have any troubles with printing with your printer in the network, it might be due to the errors in the network. So, you need to make sure that the network connection is fine.

Run the print troubleshooter and see if it reports any errors: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/printer-problems-in-windows If that fails, please reset the spooler using the steps provided in KB below: You cannot print and you receive the error message "Spooler subsystem app has encountered a problem and needs to close" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810894 Let me know if that works. Hi William, If you have an SOE image for the laptop, I would just rebuild it. If the problem repeats itself, it would be worth further analysis. Richard
