Printer shows offline. Can't change and will not print.
I can not print. When I check my printers status it shows that it is the default printer, but that it is offline. I can not change it to online. MS help recognizes this problem and suggested that I download and install a hot fix. This I did. After extracting the zip file, I clicked the exe. file to run. I got a message that said that the SP version that I have installed (SP3) is newer thant the update I am applying. There is no need to update. Where do I go from here?? I tried shutting down and restarting, and turning my printer on and off. I have a HP 4160. Thanks for your help2 people need an answerI do too

Have you uninstalled/reinstalled the printer? If not, please try that next.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I am having the same problem since I upgraded my XP system to SP3. The printers are attached to a D-Link DP300U print server on my network. It seems that whenever my XP system goes into hibernation, the printers get set to offline. Even after powering my system down and up again, the printers stay off-line and cannot be reset to on-line. The printer diagnostic did not find any problems, so I tried running the cleanspl.exe utility, but nothing changed. The only way to bring the printers back on-line is to uninstall and reinstall each printer, which is extremely annoying. Isn't there a better solution?

Try restarting printer spooler once you resume from standby or hibernate.. start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer ManagementClick services and from the right side select "Print Spooler" right click and select restart. Check if printer are online after this..

I tried restarting the print spooler and the printers are still offline. When I try to switch the printer to "Use online", I get an "Operation could not complete" message. Also, other XP systems on my home network can use the printer without any problems.
