Problem with file ownership when creating new file/folder
I have very strange problem when creating new file or folder on a Windows 7 Pro computer. The owner of the file is not the logged user but the "Administrators" group. And I think this bring some problem when trying to write/edit/save file and folder on the server. The computer is on a domain. All user are from the domain. The Domain administrator add each user in the "Administrators" group so the user is an admin on the computer. At first, everything was fine, but once all the software were installed, each time a new file is created the owner of the file is the "Administrators" group not the logged user. This become an issue when the user try to work on the server (user have all right on the server). On every other computer on the network everything is fine, file are created with the logged user as the owner. I know I can take the ownership of a file, but this have to be done every time a new file is created. Is there a way to set/reset the default owner when creating new files/folder in Windows 7? SL

Hi, Here are some suggestions you can try: 1. Login on the machine with the administrator account and add the domain user to the Administrators group on the local machine, and then please switch to the domain user to check the result. 2. Create a new admin account on the local machine and switch to the new created account for a test. Thanks, Novak

Hello, Thanks for your reply. 1. The domain user is already part of the Administrators group. 2. I will do this test soon. I have reinstall Windows 7 pro on the computer and at first there is no problem. Domain usaer part of the administrator group and when logged as the domain user when a new is created the owner is the domain user. But when I deactivate the UAC, need to do that because Visual Studio 2005 always ask for admin level, and restart, the new file are created with "administrators" as the owner instead of the domain user. The same behavior happen after installing other software. We have another computer with the same software setup under Windows 7, and there is absolutly no problem even with the UAC deactivated. Is this problem can be from the domain or the domain user? Is there a way to set the default owner for new file/folder. It's a very strange problem... RegardsSL

Hi, Please also create a new domain administrator account and login on with the new account for a test. Meanwhile, I suggest you take ownership of the root hard drive and assure the user has enough permission to modify the hard drive and sub-folders. You can try to take ownership of hard drive by using the following steps: 1. Please navigate to "Computer". 2. Right-click on the problematic hard drive and choose Properties. 3. Click the "Security" tab and see if your current user is listed in the "Group or user names" list. If not, please click the Add button, type the name of your current user in the "Enter the object names to select " box, then click "OK" to add this group. 4. Select the user from the list and then check the "Allow" checkbox next to "Full Control". 5. Click the Advanced button and click the "Owner" tab. Then, press "Edit" button. 6. Select current user from the list and check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" checkbox. 7. Click "OK" to save changes and wait for Windows 7 to transfer the ownership of all the objects on the partition. 8. Click OK again to save changes and exit the Properties window. Hope this helps.
