Random Hangs?
Hi guys, I have a problem. I've installed the RC and so far I love it - it's really snappy, it boots very quickly (which is handy for me, as you'll see!) but I keep getting hangs. I can't seem to narrow down any sort of connection between them. Sometimes I'll just be browsing the web with FireFox and it'll hang - by "Hang" i mean the mouse will stop moving, any sound will turn into mush and the computer just does not respond at all. I only installed it last night and I haven't installed anything too mad, so I don't think it could be a software thing. It did only start happening when I installed my wireless card, but that was basically the first thing I did (and the only bit of hardware that windows itself didn't find) so it could well have simply not happend yet at that point. Any ideas? I've installed the latest graphics drivers, which was my first thought. x64 here, by the way. Thanks! Dan

Hello Dan,Imglad to hear you like Windows 7RC. Was the install you did last night an upgrade or a fresh install? Also does the hang persist if you remove the wireless card?

Hi, Thanks for the response. I shall try that next, but I appear to have narrowed it down to the fact it seems to only die when I'm downloading something. The problem is, of course, being a new format, I'm downloading all manner of stuff from drivers to software etc. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm using the default FF downloader, a download manager extention for FF or indeed using uTorrent. Thus I suspect it's either a hard drive problem or a wireless card problem. More likely the latter, I suppose! I actually installed the Vista x64 drivers for it (they have no Win7 ones - indeed, I had to go to the Australian D-Link website to get any drivers newer than 2004! I'm from the UK). I shall try at first disabling the wireless card to see if that stops it, and if not I shall try removing it altogether. Thanks again for the response, Dan

Hello Dan,Before you remove the card go into Device Manager and uninstall the wireless device. Then run a scan for hardware changes,if a default Microsoft driver installs try using that one. If there isn't a defaultMicrosoft driver then try re-installing the Windows Vista x64 driver.

If there isn't a defaultMicrosoft driver then try re-installing the Windows Vista x64 driver. Unfortunately I had no luck - it just found the driver I'd already installed again. Hmm, I guess this probably means that I'll need a new Wifi adapter - I can't imagine d-link will write any Win7 specific drivers for it; It's a 5 year old bit of hardware already. Just to make sure, though, I'll grab a friend's USB Wifi dongle and give that a test, see if it sorts out the problem.

Well, I stol-... borrowed my girlfriend's Asus Wifi dongle and boom, it's working fine. I was also impressed at Win7's handling of it - I disabled then uninstalled the old card (though it reinstalled it when I rebooted my PC) and plugged in the USB one and within literally seconds it was recognised and connecting to my wireless network. Oh well, a trip to the shops for me then! Thanks for the help given, it's much appreciated. Dan
