Reinstallation of Windows XP Home
Was having problems with my computer, so wiped my hard drive clean and reinstalled Windows XP, when windows rebooted it did as usual except second screen was a log on screen, when I click on my name it asks for a password, I tried typing in a few different ones but keep getting Error, Domain does not exist contact system administrator, I can close out this window and screen returns to Log on screen but there is no way to get out of it, all I can do is turn computer off by shutting off power, when I reboot, same thing happens. Have very limited computer knowledge, can anyone out there help me out. Thanks Pilot721 person needs an answerI do too

You could not have done a clean install of Windows or you would not be getting a request for a password you didn't set and you would not see your name unless you created that user account during installation. Try again. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows - What you will need on-hand MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thanks for your reply, did another wipe of my harddrive and reinstalled Windows XP, everything seems to be working fine now. However, I could not connect to the Internet, contacted my ISP and we got into device manager, and under other devices, I have a yellow question mark for, Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Conytoller, SM Bus Controller USB Controller and Video Controller, they told me I would have to reinstall drivers for all of them. I do not have any installation CD's for these items, I went to HP.com and looked under their driver downloads but did not see anything that looked like any of the 5 I needed, however I probably did not know what I was looking for, support tech at HP said drivers may not be available as my computer is a little old, 2004/2005. I have an HP Pavillion a296n, any idea where I can find what I need, I am sort of screwed without them I would think. Thanks Bud

Here you go: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=352536 They have all the original drivers towards the bottom of the page. MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Once again, thanks for your reply to my questions, I had already been to that site, but was unsure of which drivers to download, I did not see one for the ethernet, USB, or SM Bus Controllers, are they listed under another technical name, I assumed that the Audio and Video/Graphic were the right ones, but not sure of the rest. As I explained, this is all very new to me and I have a very limited knowledge about the workings of a computer. Thanks Bud

On re-reading your post - did you not use the HP recovery media to reinstall Windows? If you had done this, there would be no drivers issue at all because the image would have already included the drivers. What did you use to reinstall Windows? There is a link to where you can order the recovery discs. If you used a retail XP disc with its own Product Key OR a generic OEM disc (seems unlikely you would have one of these) with the Product Key from your sticker, that's the only time you would need drivers. As for which ones, once again: go to the bottom of the page of the link I gave you above. Under "Original Drivers Collection" you want the audio, card reader, chipset, graphic, keyboard, modem, RAID, TV Tuner, and network drivers. You don't need the monitor drivers.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
