Remote Desktop Keeps Eventually Switching to RDP Audio
I have a weird issue with Windows XP Pro SP3 on both sides of an RDP connection. I use one PC as a jukebox with outputs plugged into my receiver, and control that PC via RDP within my own home network. I have the "Play on Remote Computer" setting on (it's RDP 6.1.7600), and when I connect it plays just fine. Eventually, the audio switches itself and I can no longer hear anything. When this happens, I notice the device listed under the Sounds control panel goes from Realtek HD Audio to RDP Audio. If it close the RDP session without logging off and reconnect, the audio comes back... until it changes again later. It can take days before it happens or it can take just a couple of hours... no rhyme or reason. Any thoughts?1 person needs an answerI do too

Hey Lee,I haven't found any content on your specific issue, but I may have come up with a way to permanently disable audio redirection on your "jukebox". The following steps will disable audio redirection over RDP:On the Host PC (your jukebox), click Start and choose Run Type gpedit.msc and press Enter In the left pane, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Terminal Services > Client/Server data redirection In the right pane, find Allow audio redirection. Double click it and it should open it's Properties window.Choose Disabled and click OK Close Group Policy and reboot the system Once that's done, test out RDP and see if it helps resolve the issue. Thanks for replying, Cody! Unfortunately, that policy does not appear to be anywhere in XP's Group Policy (both host & remote PCs are XP SP3).

Nope, it's not there... on the host system. I looked at the the system I am using to connect to the host, however, and the policy IS there. I guess the question then is whether Group Policy would hide that particular policy when looking at it through an RDP session. I have no mouse, keyboard or monitor connected to that PC to sign in locally, so I'd have to dig it out of a cabinet and connect it somewhere else to change the setting, if the setting will be there in a local session. Does anyone else see the same behavior through an RDP session on an XP system?

I finally figured out that I was missing some templates in group policy and was able to add them to get the policy I needed. I set "Allow audio redirection" to Disabled and rebooted the computer. However, now it does it WORSE. It's actually making the change on the jukebox PC from Realtek HD Audio to RDP Audio in just a couple of hours after resetting the remote session, and often in between SONGS. Windows Media Player will just stop because it lost its audio device. Any other thoughts from anyone? It's driving me buggy.
