Remote Desktop Log Out to User Lock Screen

Hello TechNet,

I'm using Windows 8.1 for the Slide Show functionality on a given user's Lock Screen. I want to be able to Remote Desktop into Windows 8.1 machine, change the images to be displayed from time to time, and then kill the remote connection and have the Windows 8.1 machine default to the Lock Screen of the user I was just Remote Desktop'd into the machine with.

Currently, I can remote into my slideshow machine, make changes fine, but when I kill the remote connection it spits the machine into the signin screen eventually displaying the default Lock Screen image rather than a user's lock screen. Is there any way to set it so that when a remote connection is killed the previous user's Lock Screen Slideshow will play instead of the sign in screen and default lock image?

Thanks,

Stas Schaller

Hi Stas,

When we perform a remote connection, we are getting the desktop UI as the remote desktop.
To keep the lock screen, we could refer to the method as Frederick to configure the local machine.

Best regards

Frederick,

I know how to lock an 8.1 machine, though I appreciate the reply. What I'm trying to do is kill the connection to a computer I have Remote Desktop'd into via closing the window and having that computer I just logged out of default to using that user's lock screen.

Do you have ideas there?

Thanks,

Stas

I gave you the answer. Don't kill the session just lock the session.

Go into the metro UI and lock the session or use CTRL+ALT+END and select LOCK

Frederick,

Would that show the lock screen slideshow on the host computer?

It would show the lock screen of the computer you remote desktop to.

You are connected to comp1 you decide to RDP to comp2 using account user1.

On comp2 using user1 you change the background you now need to lock the session to show user1 lock screen.

You do either of the trick that i gave you and will lock user1 on comp2 now all you have to do is close the sessions with the BIG X.

Unfortunately, this did not work.

Steps taken:

Comp1 logs into comp2 using remote desktop on username.

Lock screen slideshow settings are changed on username's account.

Screen is locked on username's account. Big X is pushed to disconnect from comp2.

Comp2 shows its own sign in screen rather than the desired username's lock screen.

Hi Stas Schaller,

When you close the remote desktop from the comp2, please check the following registry keys value and compare it with the configurations when you perform a remote desktop.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen
SlideshowEnabled Play a slide show on the Lock Screen
Value data : 0 = Off | 1 = On
DWORD : SlideshowEnabledOnBattery Play a slide show when using battery power
Value data : 0 = Off | 1 = On
DWORD : SlideshowOptimizePhotoSelection Let Windows choose pictures for my slide show
Value data : 0 = Off | 1 = On
DWORD : SlideshowDuration Turn off screen after slide show has played for
Value data (Decimal) : 1800000 = 30 minutes | 3600000 = 1 hour | 10800000 = 3 hours | 0 = Dont turn off

The slideshow configuration has nothing to do with the remote desktop. This configuration is related to the user account profile.
Have you tried to remote to comp1 from comp2 to have a check? Is this a domain environment?

Helo Meipo Xu,

Here are the values when comp1 is logged into comp2:

SlideshowEnabled = 1
SlideshowEnabledOnBattery = Not present
SlideshowOptimizePhotoSelection = 0
SlideshowDuration = Not present

Here they are after the remote connection from comp1 to comp2 is closed:

SlideshowEnabled = 1
SlideshowEnabledOnBattery = Not present
SlideshowOptimizePhotoSelection = 0
SlideshowDuration = Not present

This is a domain environment.

Hi Stas,

Have you checked any group policy(User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Personalization ) deployed to the machine?
Run "RSOP.msc" and then check the result.

I think we may have some misunderstanding here. I will try to clarify it more clearly.
Comp 1 : host machine.
Com2 : Remote to.
Com1 log into comp2 change the slideshow. Com1 will get two desktops, please ensure you changed the slideshow when you are on the comp2` desktop.

Close the remote desktop:
Two scenerios:
1.The Com2 won`t show the changed slideshow.
2.The comp1 won`t show the changed slideshow.

If it is the latter, it is a normal symptom. We just need to change the slideshow on the com1. This has nothing to do with the remote desktop. The slideshow is based on the user profile. If the slideshow won`t be saved, we could try to login with another account to have a check. The issue could be related to the user profile login on the Com1.

If it is the former, the account we remote to log on the Com2 should be the same as the one which log on the Comp 2 now. If the issue persists, please try to change the account login on the Com2 to have a check.

Hello Meipo,

What would I be looking for in group policy? My company has applied some I'm sure but it doesn't seem to concern any lock screens or remote desktop ability beyond what users can do it to what machines.

In line with clarification:

The slideshow does change on Comp2, but when Comp1 closes the remote desktop connection to Comp2, Comp2 shows the select user for log in screen. Using the same user on Comp1 as Comp2, I would like to have Comp2 show the lock screen slideshow after Comp1 closes the remote desktop connection to Comp2 rather than Comp2's select user screen.

Thanks,

Stas

Hi Stas,

" I would like to have Comp2 show the lock screen slideshow"
Please log on the comp2 with the account you have used to remote to after you closed the remote connection. We could log off and logon the comp2 to have a check.

In addition, please test with the local account instead of the domain account.
