Remote access share folder between two computers
I have two computers connected with a CAT5 cable, both have firewall enabled. This network does not have server, DNS & DHCP server, or router. Just two XP SP3 computers.Firewall enabled File and Printer Sharing checked with Custom list selected Two type of tests:Test 1: I configured both computers with static IP address and enter the IP network subnet 10.0.0.0/24 in the Custom List. The PC-A (10.0.0.1) and access PC-B (10.0.0.2) by typing\\computername or \\IP_Address. The shared folder accessing has no problem with this setting.Test 2: I changed the Static IP to Dynamic IP on both computer, and let XP self generate dynamic IP 169.x.x.x. I went to Custom List and changed to 169.0.0.0/16, this settings I am unable to access remote folder.I could not access by \\IP_Address get a error message "Network path cannot be found"The \\Computername took almost a minute to open a window, but it did now show shared resources, like folder share.I can ping by IP address, but could not ping by computername Questions:Is Class B allowed in the Custom List? Can I use Windows XP dynamic IP address to connect between two computers or multiple computers? Why Class C worked fine and not Class B? Is it because I used XP dynamic IP or Custom List does not access Class B or both?Johnny 1 person got this answerI do too

HiPart of a Wireless cable/DSL Router is a DHCP Server. The server assigns IP address to the Network computers that are configured to Auto Obtain IP address. If for some reason the computer cannot connect to the Router, it cannot obtain an IP and Windows assign a default IP 169.xxx.xxxx.xxx. This IP is Not functional IP for regular internet and network purpose.Since you do not have any DHCP server on your system you must use Static IP as you did before. Jack-MVP Windows Networking.
