Replace Windows 7 shell with application - Windows update / anti virus ok?
Hi,I'm working on a project to create a kiosk type PC that will only start up with our application. We don't want the user to see any of the Windows UI if possible.I've managed to lock down Win7 pretty much (no task manager, removed most options when doing CTRL ALT DEL and it auto logs in as acertain user).I've also changed Windows from using Explorer.exe to our app.It seems to work fine but I'm concerned about the following;1. Will Windows Update (currently set to download and install updates automatically) still work? I'm hoping so as it's running as a Service.2. Same question for anti virus (currently using AVG, which also runs as a service).Any ideas are welcome! Thanks.

Robert - The only way you can be 100% sure would likely be to try it. Patch Tuesday is coming up this week - there should be some updates to be had come then. The main issue I can see with Windows Update in a situation like this - Windows Update decides to download, install and reboot - right in the middle of a session where the guy using it just finished entering some data - and suddenly it went poof... Not the friendliest thing to have happen to you - especially if you're on the final page of a rather long data entry process...Might want to seriuosly limit Windows Update activities to some point in time where you know no one is going to be using the interface. Most antivirus updates don't generally require a reboot - unless some component (beyond the AV definitions) of the app is being upgraded.

Hi,Thanks for the prompt answer :)I was also thinking about disabling Win Update and manually push out updates (I guess I'd have to package the updates as well then). But I think I'll save that massive piece of work for Mk2 of our system !Cheers.

Robert -Yeah.. That'd be a bit of a sticky wicket... I'm assuming this is supposed to be set up as a stand alone box that'll be mostly unattended. Maybe there's a way to do the interface so you can have access to an administrator mode - complete with the usual Windows interface.
