Restore Local Settings Folder - Win 7 64
I recently upgraded to Win 7 64 from XP 64 here at work. After everything was done, I tried to access Local Settings and got the "access denied" message. This was before I knew Local Settings was now in AppData\Local. Here's a rundown of what proceeded: I checked permissions and my username was greyed out but had check marks next to everything under Allow except special permissions. I spoke to my network administrator and asked him to login as an admin so that he could check my permissions on the folder. He did, checked the permissions and everything for my username was the same as I had seen it when I checked earlier. He then tried to assign ownership of the folder to me, but the only available option was admin. He selected that, but the process never completed, so he quit that dialogue box. He then did some quick research and discovered that Local Settings now resides in AppData\Local, saw that the Local Settings folder was empty and decided to delete it. He was not aware at the time that it was a junction folder. Afterward, I did some of my own research and discovered that Local Settings was a junction folder and that it did indeed need to be there. I then opened all of the programs I use on a daily basis and checked my user folder once again. The Local Settings folder is back now (as if it got created when needed?), but the icon is not the same as before and now I can access it without getting the 'access denied' message. Inside this folder are two folders: Temp Application Data Inside Application Data, there is a folder for only one of my programs and that is AutoDesk 3ds Max 2009. I hope this helps illustrate everything that took place. The questions I'm having are: Is it possible to restore the Local Settings folder to act in the fashion it did before being deleted by my admin? How was my network admin able to delete the folder if it is protected? Or does protected mean protected from access and not from deletion? Is the new version of the folder that got created the same as what is was before, or is it something different, since it's not behaving quite as it should? Should there even be items in there? The owner of the folder is listed as the admin, so it seems to me that his taking ownership may have succeeded. Should he give ownership back to my username? Although this next one may be a separate question, I'll ask as I wonder if its related; When I Open or Save in 3ds Max, I get an old version of the dialog box. By that I mean, it doesn't show a button for Recent Places, Desktop, Libraries, Computer, and Network. Is the lack of those buttons a result of messing with the Local Settings folder or is it unrelated? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, Regarding your question: · If the restore point is created before deleting the Local Settings folder, you can restore that folder. It seems the new Local Settings folder is created by AutoDesk 3ds Max 2009. Check if Previous Versions will work on this folder: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions · The Local Settings folder can be removed if you are the owner of the folder. · The new folder is not the same as previous one. I think it is not a junction. It is just created by one software which behaves likes Windows XP . However, other software won't save the data there. Please understand the software cache, temp folder should be save in AppData\Local in Windows 7. · Since it is your profile, please change the owner. If your name is not in list, click Other users or groups button to find. · Regarding your 3ds Max, which version you are installed. If it behaves likes the old version, it will still save the data to Local Settings folder. Hi Niki, Thanks for taking the time to respond. Nope, previous version did not work. Prev ver only went back a couple days, and the deletion occured well before that time. Thanks for the info on the ability to remove as owner. I'll keep that in mind for future reference. Yeah, that's what I figured that the 'new' Local Settings is just acting as a storage point and not a junction. That temp folder seems to have only been created for and used by 3ds Max. I do have one under AppData\Local as well. The version of of 3ds Max is Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2009 64-bit. I kept digging on the web, though, and finally found a solution here http://www.winvistatips.com/restore-users-profiles-junctions-t788928.html Here's the info from the post that solved it: "Recreating the junctions to proper standards can be done manually (and even scripted), and I'll walk through a "My Documents" example here. Open a command prompt with administrative rights and move to your user profile folder. To begin with, create the junction: mklink /J "My Documents" Documents Next, set the ownership of the link to SYSTEM (/L denotes that we work on the junction rather than the target): icacls "My Documents" /setowner SYSTEM /L Third step, assign access rights to everyone (which is a denial of rights): icacls "My Documents" /deny Everyone:(S,RD) /L Finally, set the junction to be non-indexed, hidden, and a system file: attrib +H +S +I "My Documents" /L That should do the trick, barring any explanation errors. Below is a list of all the junctions' (left) mappings to folders (right), relative to the user profile directory: Application Data: AppData\Roaming Cookies: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies Local Settings: AppData\Local My Documents: Documents NetHood: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts PrintHood: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Printer Shortcuts Recent: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent SendTo: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo Start Menu: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu Templates: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates" It worked like a charm! My Local Settings junction folder is back in place now. I moved all the 3ds Max stuff over into AppData\Local and the program seems to work as usual. The Open/Save As dialog box is still the old style one (no recent places, desktop, libraries, computer, and network buttons), so I guess that issue isn't related to this. Thanks!
