Running Windows 7 RC in Virtual PC
Hello, I'm running Windows 7 in a Virtual PC 2007 image. On my DELL laptop, the guest CPU runs at 100% rendering the system irresponsive. Looking at Task Manager, the process that is using most of the CPU is, erm... Task Manager! The CPU on the Host is also 100% used, with virtualpc.exe using most of it, but the system responds well (?!?). The same HD image, used on another computer, a DELL desktop this time, works fine.Neither computer has hardware-assisted virtualization. I run VPC SP1. I tried to switch to Virtual Server, but didn't help. Any input appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Sorry, I should have mentioned it before - I'm running XP.

Windows Virtual PC (to what the link refers) won't help on computers without hardware-assisted virtualization. I think the OP refers to MS VPC 2007 SP1, there is no newer version to that. Fabio: I tried the same thing with the Beta and had no similar problems. The system worked really slow, as 1 GB RAM are clearly insufficient to run both a host and a guest system. But the 100 % CPU usage never happened. So, maybe it's a problem with your settings.Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

What are your specs? You are going to need a beefy laptop in order to do it. Look at system requirements and add about 50 percent to them and then add more if you want to run apps. I am running it on a laptop with VMware and runs ok but not great and have 4 gigs of Ram and a duo core Centrino with VT. If I try to open 1 session of Windows 7 and XP then try launching Vista I can put it to a crawl where I can not do anything.Tim Comes

Hi Tim, Thanks for your reply. The laptop is not exactly 'beefy', but the VM has been allocated 1GB of RAM, with 2GB altogether on the host. However, the problem I'm seeing is not so much with memory, but with the CPU running at 100% all the time. I was wondering if this was some kind of known issue with Virtual PC or even with DELL laptops, perhaps? I guess I was hoping to see if anyone had experienced this before and would be able to provide their input... Thanks.
