Is this for integration with an cloud or non-on premise Exchange environment? If so, it is not necessary to use a SBC as the Lync Edge services provide secure SIP already. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2399955
If this is not the scenario, can you provide more information?
I take back my "Propose as Answer", on the other post, I accidentally clicked on it...sorry...
The question is a tricky one, I don't think I have seen that done before. I don't know the answer.
- NAT traversal
- SIP normalization via SIP message and header manipulation
- IPv4 to IPv6 interworking
- VPN connectivity
- Protocol translations between SIP, SIP-I, H.323
So if you need to integrate premise Lync 2010 with hosted ExUm 2010, I would suggest you make them integrated as Mark said.
More information about how SBC worked in Lync 2010, please check this document.

There is nothing in Jeff's article suggesting that an SBC can be used between on prem Lync EV and Exchange UM. Please answer questions with care, as you may mislead someone into believing something can be done, when the it may actually not be.
I've never heard of placing an SBC between on prem Lync and Exchange UM. I'm not saying it can't be done. I do question the supportability from and MS perspective, as well as the need/justification for it.
