Service Host (svchost.exe) Using 99% CPU
Hey guys-
I know this question has been asked for other Windows OS's, but none of their fixes apply on Windows 8.
When I log in, everything is fine, everything is very smooth and even faster than when I used Windows 7, but after a few minutes my CPU becomes locked at ~99%, mostly because of svchost.
As it appears on Task Manager, the process is Service Host (No Impersonation). The sub-processes are Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Recovery, Time Broker, and UPnP Device Host. I tried several fixes that worked in XP or 7, but they either
can't be used in 8 or detect nothing is wrong.
This is the only thing that makes me dislike 8 so far, a fix would be fantastic.

Make a xperf trace to see the cause. Install the WPT (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt-en-us.aspx),
open a CMD prompt with admin rights and type this:
xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 512 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d highCPUUsage.etl
after you captured 30s of the cpu usage, go back to CMD prompt and press a key to stop the logging. Now compress the
highCPUUsage.etl as 7z (LZMA2, ULTRA) to reduce the size. Upload this file to your SkyDrive or Dropbox and post a link
here.

If you have upgraded from Windows 8.1 and you have a high CPU usage that you can't detect in Process Explorer like shown here:
you have an issue with a scheduled task. Look at the green "sdclt.exe". This means the sdclt.exe is started very often. This causes the CPU usage.
You can see this best in ProcessMonitor:
The solution is to disable this task in the task scheduler:
Also phone the Support and open a case so that MS can fix this issue.

I'm very sorry for not knowing this, but... where is the ETL located? I looked in the WPT directory as well as my documents and downloads. Sorry for the late reply, as I said, my computer is very slow right now.
October 30th, 2012 1:31am
the file is created in the folder where you run the command. By default, Windows opens the command prompt with admin rights in C:\Windows\System32. So look there for the file

If that isn't 30 seconds, sorry, I counted the time and press Enter to stop the process, but it didn't say it was done until like 2 minutes later.

The uPNP service causes the high CPU usage while waiting for compatible devices:
disable the service and try again.
November 1st, 2012 1:29am
Yeah, I just ended the process completely, and it seems to have permanently fixed the problem even after reboot, thanks a lot!!! Now much, much faster.

avast (aswSnx.sys) is doing some wired things. Remove it and see if this fixes it. Also, how many free RAM do you have at the time you get the high CPU usage?
February 1st, 2013 9:04am
Ok il will remove Avast.
My RAM is ok. When my CPU is at 100% i have about 6go of Free RAM.
I have noticed that this problem arrive when i was in my browser in the internet...

I just disabled SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host services, after reboot I still have svchost.exe memory usage increasing. is it possible that I have a virus infection causing it? if yes, how do I clean it? I use to have Avast now I'm using Avira, but
none of then found something

in your case the cause is the "Software Protection" service which checks if your system is genuine.
The svchost.exe usage is smaller and comes from the Firewall service (FirewallAPI.DLL!FwEnumRules). How much Rules do you have defined?
March 3rd, 2013 10:42am
Yes I had already seen this process in task manager and I had disabled all security application like firewall and windows defender (and some others) from "msconfig > services" before recording performance, but I dont know why it is running?
(I have not genuine copy of windows may be thats why it is running?)
I have windows 8 so from where I'd see or define rules????

you don't have an issue, 1 exe uses 1% CPU usage. It is normal to see many different svchost.exe are running:

the only CPU usage I can see is from the driver ex64.sys which causes some Kernel/SYSTEM CPU Usage. This driver comes from Symantec. Look if there is an update. You use version 20121.3.0.76.

which issue do you have? I only see some CPU usage caused by chrome.exe (green).
the small cpu usgae (orange) by the service host exe comes from the Windows Account/LiveID service. which reads it configuration data.
Watch this video on how to use it:

Hi Andre,
Cheers for the video.
I think I may have jumped in with a slightly different issue. My CPU is fine but my memory has just recently started going to 99%. The taskmanager doesn't show any applications with using anywhere near enough memory to make up the 99%. I have 12GB of RAM
so it really shouldn't be happening. I ran RAMMap and it seemed to show a huge amount of memory being taken up by the Nonpaged pool. No idea how to investigate it further though. Any ideas?

Hi Andre, sorry for asking this, but can you tell me a step-by-step process on what to do? I am kinda new to using these types of things. After I type the xperf command, what do I do? Sorry for asking this. Thank you in advance.

which issue do you have? The CPU is idle all the time.
The only thing you can do is to update the Atheros network driver from 10.0.0.216 to 10.0.0.234
http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=60&system=7
The other thing I can see is some ACPI.sys calls from accelerometer.sys (HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor). So update or remove this HP tool from your HP ProBook 4540s.

Memory usually goes up to 1.3Gb Ram without doing anything. most of them because of Service Host: Local Service(15,8, (network Restricted 7,8), No network,....) Disk also get up to 99-100%. when i look into Task manager and sort Disk to see which cause my
disk goes to high. i see the " Antimalware Service Executable and Service Host: local system (network Restricted) (9).\
Thank you

what you see is superfetch. But superfetch doesn't impact you:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.03.vistakernel.aspx
because it runs at low IO priority.
June 16th, 2013 9:13am
so what should i do now :(
June 16th, 2013 3:44pm
let it run a while and after Windows cached enough data, Windows is fast.
June 16th, 2013 10:09pm
oh, tks a lots, do i need to disable it ? i guess if disable it may cause lags and delays
June 17th, 2013 5:10am
don't disable supefetch or your Windows will be extremely slow.

sorry for hijack this thread, I am not on Win 8, i am on Windows server 2008 r2, i see svchost.exe(NetworkService) high CPU usage. With Windows Explorer, i can find that it is threads for WinRM service in this process that actually consumes the CPU, i tried
to restart Windows Remote Management service in services.msc but failed. I don't know what will cause if i kill the WinRM threads, so i just suspend them first. Then, CPU usage is normal. However, i still cannot restart the service in services.msc. Then,
i killed these threads, and i can restart the Windows Remote Management service.

Hi Andre,
I am also facing the high CPU utilization problem by svchost.exe
NO, you have a virus/malware with the name
svhost.exe (without c) which uses your CPU to do some calculations.
C:\Users\Pushkar\AppData\Roaming\data\svhost.exe -o http://pool.darkcarder.com:8332 -O albert1408.22:80uhkaw3cwn2pg63nz
July 13th, 2013 3:52am
Thanks Andre!
I am surprised how it got into my system when the Windows Defender is updated!!!
Guess I need a good anti-virus programme now... I thought Microsoft had done good job by providing anti-virus & anti-malware functionality in Defender, but it seems otherwise now :(
July 13th, 2013 9:33am
Defender is not very good. Use a different AV tool.

You have 2 issues.
1st: the DHCP client tries to renew the TCP config and this causes CPUusage:
(dhcpcore.dll!DhcpRenewThread/dhcpcore.dll!SendDhcpRequest)
2nd: Writing a firewall rule causes cpu usage (mpssvc.dll!RPC_FWIndicatePortInUse, mpssvc.dll!CDfwEngWriter::GenerateFwRule)

I have the same problem and I try to run the xperf... But I get the error: buffersize cannot contain 4 argument(s). Can you help me?

copy/paste the command into the command prompt. It worked for others, so it must also work for you.
July 17th, 2013 3:29pm
Yeah, I tried it again and it worked fine. Must have hit an accidental space or something. However, as you might guess I also have the slowing down problem. Would you be so kind to look at my .etl? Here's the link: hxxp://www.dropbox.com/s/95d1l4ozrbkan3x/highCPUUsage.7z
I run Windows 8 Pro 64 bit (6.2, build 9200) on a HP Touchsmart tm2 NoteBook PC with 8 GB RAM and an Intel Core i3 CPU (U 330 @ 1.20 GHz) processor.
Thanks in advance!
July 17th, 2013 5:23pm
in your case the CPU usage comes from Superfetch service. But I don't recommend you to disable it.
YOu should remove AVG and see if this improves the situation. There are 3 AVG tools which also generate a high CPU usage.
July 18th, 2013 1:39am
Thanks! It seems to work :). But: now of course there is no virus scanner etc. Any recommendations?
July 18th, 2013 3:28am
Windows 8 already includes Windows Defender. If this is enough for you, you can use it.
I personally use NOD32.

hi Andre I can across this post and i see most people have a similar problem, my laptop is a month old and i have 12 gb of ram, within an hour 10 gb of ram usage is seen in my task manager, it keeps on growing, dont know what to do.
July 30th, 2013 3:56am
Run RAMMap to see what is causing the Memory usage:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2010/08/13/introduction-to-the-new-sysinternals-tool-rammap.aspx
July 30th, 2013 3:19pm
Hello Andre, i downloaded the ram map, and o tried opening the tree below each scv host application, but it says error opening when i hover the mouse pointer above the dependents. the Svc host is fine saying windows 32 in the file location even thou
i have a 64bit op system. This is in the process explorer app, but do not know what to look for in the ram map. it is quite confusing. sorry about my dudness
August 2nd, 2013 8:22am
Also, it wont let me suspend kill restart any svc host dependent, and yes i dont have any malware. i have norton and have used spy bot and many things to check, system is clean
August 2nd, 2013 8:23am
what are you trying to do? Post some screenshots.
August 2nd, 2013 2:50pm
Hi Andre, I have the same issue with high cpu usuage. Earlier I thought it was due to windows defender, so I disabled that service and put in Norton. However, the problem persists. My etl file is here www.dropbox.com/s/az5wyvg880b924h/highCPUUsage.etl.
I would really appreciate it if you could take a quick look.
August 3rd, 2013 4:03pm
I see no high CPU usage in the trace.
August 3rd, 2013 4:24pm
Hi, and now probably some bigger mystery:
Its always taskhost that starts eating my CPU
Thanks in advance for any help!
the trace is too short. Run it for at least 30s not 1.5s like you did.
August 5th, 2013 1:59pm
the trace is too short. Run it for at least 30s not 1.5s like you did.
August 6th, 2013 5:44am
this is confusing. Taskhost.exe itself only causes the usage. There is no real callstack.
The only thing I can see is that the nvinitx.dll is loaded into this process. You use the nVIDIA driver 320.49. Try the latest beta and look if this fixes it:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-notebook-winblue-win8-win7-64bit-326.19-beta-driver.html

August 26th, 2013 12:48am
Hey guys-
I know this question has been asked for other Windows OS's, but none of their fixes apply on Windows 8.
This is the only thing that makes me dislike 8 so far, a fix would be fantastic.
hey im having the exact same problem as well
https://www.dropbox.com/s/hi15cyfb9wgta93/highCPUUsage.zip
here is the Xperf scan i did if you can take a look at it
Thank you, CP
September 13th, 2013 7:02pm
I don't know if people are still having this issue, but this is what I do when something like this happens:
1.) I go into task manager to locate the CPU hog, then trace it to Services, after locating the services causing the CPU overuse, I
reset them. I don't recommend stopping anything, just restart it and see what happens. (This may take a short while to have an effect, or you will need to repeat this a few times.)
2.) The other fix that seems to work for me is to simply restart my Win8 PC.
These sort of problems usually happen to me when I put my PC on Standby or Hibernate (like Time Broker for instance). I'm not sure why this happens (this topic for another forum)...
Like I said, this is what happens to me. This may not be the same with other people, but I'd thought I'd share anyways.

Hi Andre I'm sorry but I can't install the WPT. They said C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\atiumdag.dll is not made to perform under windows or may contain an error. I tried to translate the best I could. My pc is in French. Do you have any tips to fix that problem
before I go in further details. My pc is extremely slow I can't do any task anymore Thank you

How did you find it out? Is there any instruction on how to look at the the problem?
It would be useful for me to know how to check the problem.
I only see timeout.exe uses a lot of cpu time.
Thanks!

I was wondering if you would be able to help me figure out why my CPU usage is also so high please? Idles at 42-43% constantly.
I have tried everything I could think to resolve it but in the end I was referred to this thread and have followed the instructions to create the log file you wanted and uploaded to skydrive: Shortened link below.

Thanks for any assistance

you have the same issue like the other users. The sdclt.exe is started and closed every second. Also disable the WindowsBackup notification task.

Hi - I am guessing I am also another victim of sdclt.exe but I cannot pinpoint it. Task manager claims 100% cpu usage while Process Explorer does not say so. Here is the upload:

Thank you!

Hi - I am guessing I am also another victim of sdclt.exe
yes, you're also such a victim. Disable the task in the task scheduler.
the svchost.exe usage comes from the APp Experience service (required for UAC)
November 1st, 2013 2:27pm
Thank you for confirming, but I am no sure which task exactly is causing this.
I looked at Microsoft\Windows\"Application Experience", there are 3 jobs, none of them seem to have an action item that's relevant.
Same is true for 'WindowsBackup'
Application Experience Service was set to manual and stopping it for testing did not help. Looking at Process Explorer data does not provide useful info either.
I see a lot of these processes created and destroyed, yes, but I also see taskhostex.exe taking up the much of CPU. Is it b/c it's constantly creating and destroying these?

Dear Andre, please help!
I upgraded Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Pro and after install my HP6720s laptop is experiencing high CPU usage, heating and fan continuously working. I noticed in Task Manager that "Windows host process (rundll32)" is responsible for that situation, but
I couldn`t figure why? After I kill that process in Task Manager (in order to test), fan immediately slows down, but after few minutes starts to work hard again, but not for so long as before killing rundll32 process. I`m stuck at this point, I couldn`t find
right solution on the Internet, although I `ve seen a lot of people having problem with high CPU usage and processor heating on different laptops after transition from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.....
Here is my etl file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24530567/highCPUUsage.zip
Many thanks!

in your case the Application Experience Program Inventory Component (aeinv.dll) causes the high CPU usage (aeinv.dll!
UpdateSoftwareInventoryW) by scanning all you installed software.

open task scheduler and disable the notification task:

I tried that, the sdclt.exe is still active after reboot. I even deleted the windows backup from task scheduler and rebooted and it is still active.

a bad workaround would be to rename the exe
November 8th, 2013 4:09pm
yes, eventualy i did that. I removed the hdd, put it on another laptop as secondary dryve, took ownership of sdclt.exe and renamed it. Now everything is normal. Will this somehow affect the normal operation of windows?
Was it a virus?
Anyway, thank you for your help in this matter.

sdclt.exe is no virus, this is a 8.1 bug. In 8.1 the backup is removed, but this notification exe is still there.

OK, I've been after the same issue for 2 weeks already, Windows 7 x64 Home Premium.
The culprit again was UPnP Device Host and as I need this service operational, I just couldn't disable it. So in my case I have a wireless network adapter, that is shared with my on-board wired LAN adapter. At the same time the wired adapter is disabled.
After removing the Internet connection sharing, svchost.exe stopped using 80%+ of CPU.

the small cpu usage comes from coreServiceShell.exe and YCMMirage.exe.
To see the RAM usage, too you must run this command:
xperf -on latency+ReferenceSet -stackwalk profile+VirtualAlloc+VirtualFree -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 1024 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d HighCPUUsageWithVAlloc.etl

The trace shows some CPU usgae spikes by a tool called (fnfdeiocg.exe) which uses OpenCL (igdfcl32.dll). I think this is a malware (based on the file location:
C:\Users\Iulian\AppData\Local\Temp\pjruprzcodwy\fnfdeiocg.exe -c "C:\Users\Iulian\AppData\Local\Temp\pjruprzcodwy\cfgb").
Looks like this tool uses your hardware for some calculations. Boot into safe mode, run AutoRuns, cleanup the tools and do a virus scan.

Andre,
I've got another one for you. I installed a network card that wasn't compatible with Win8 and now my cpu and audio/video is going nuts. I've removed that card but I'm still having issues. Here is my file. Thanks

Hi Andre,
Please could you assist to analyse my etl file. Link is below.
100% CPU started yesterday. Most probable connection I can think of - I installed some Office patches that showed available.
Sorry - might have been bit longer than 30sec as prompt screen wasn't initially responsive. Compressed file is 11MB.

Many thanks.

I've made the "highCPUUsage.etl" but I can't seem to find it in my 7-zip File Manager. The only etl file I've found at all is labeled "kernel.etl" and it's found right in the local disk C:\ page. I've searched for it with my File Explorer and found it and
it's listed as under C:\Windows\System32\ in there but when I open up to that file on my 7-zip File Manager it's not there. Should I just put the 43mb one in dropbox and post that link?

Hello, Andre!
This is a link to my xperf file, hope you can help me out with this. If it's in any way helpful, I get the high CPU spikes while streaming using a program called OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). However, it's not OBS that causes the spikes, it sits at a
constant 27~32% CPU usage.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated!
Have a good day!
