Service Host (svchost.exe) Using 99% CPU

Hey guys-

I know this question has been asked for other Windows OS's, but none of their fixes apply on Windows 8.

When I log in, everything is fine, everything is very smooth and even faster than when I used Windows 7, but after a few minutes my CPU becomes locked at ~99%, mostly because of svchost.

As it appears on Task Manager, the process is Service Host (No Impersonation). The sub-processes are Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Recovery, Time Broker, and UPnP Device Host. I tried several fixes that worked in XP or 7, but they either can't be used in 8 or detect nothing is wrong.

This is the only thing that makes me dislike 8 so far, a fix would be fantastic.

Make a xperf trace to see the cause. Install the WPT (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt-en-us.aspx), open a CMD prompt with admin rights and type this:

xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 512 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d highCPUUsage.etl

after you captured 30s of the cpu usage, go back to CMD prompt and press a key to stop the logging. Now compress the highCPUUsage.etl as 7z (LZMA2, ULTRA) to reduce the size. Upload this file to your SkyDrive or Dropbox and post a link here.

If you have upgraded from Windows 8.1 and you have a high CPU usage that you can't detect in Process Explorer like shown here:

you have an issue with a scheduled task. Look at the green "sdclt.exe". This means the sdclt.exe is started very often. This causes the CPU usage.

You can see this best in ProcessMonitor:

The solution is to disable this task in the task scheduler:

Also phone the Support and open a case so that MS can fix this issue.

I'm very sorry for not knowing this, but... where is the ETL located? I looked in the WPT directory as well as my documents and downloads. Sorry for the late reply, as I said, my computer is very slow right now.

the file is created in the folder where you run the command. By default, Windows opens the command prompt with admin rights in C:\Windows\System32. So look there for the file

If that isn't 30 seconds, sorry, I counted the time and press Enter to stop the process, but it didn't say it was done until like 2 minutes later.

The uPNP service causes the high CPU usage while waiting for compatible devices:

disable the service and try again.

Yeah, I just ended the process completely, and it seems to have permanently fixed the problem even after reboot, thanks a lot!!! Now much, much faster.

avast (aswSnx.sys) is doing some wired things. Remove it and see if this fixes it. Also, how many free RAM do you have at the time you get the high CPU usage?

so please check,

I have the same problem

in your case the cause is the "Software Protection" service which checks if your system is genuine.

The svchost.exe usage is smaller and comes from the Firewall service (FirewallAPI.DLL!FwEnumRules). How much Rules do you have defined?

March 3rd, 2013 10:42am

Yes I had already seen this process in task manager and I had disabled all security application like firewall and windows defender (and some others) from "msconfig > services" before recording performance, but I dont know why it is running?
(I have not genuine copy of windows may be thats why it is running?)

I have windows 8 so from where I'd see or define rules????

the only CPU usage I can see is from the driver ex64.sys which causes some Kernel/SYSTEM CPU Usage. This driver comes from Symantec. Look if there is an update. You use version 20121.3.0.76.

the trace is corrupted. Stop taskmgr, PerfMonitor and ProcessExplorer before runing xperf.

May 28th, 2013 6:20pm

Hello Andre,

I closed the taskmanager but I couldn't find PerfMonitor and ProcessExplorer. The huge CPU usage not only occurs at start up but also when running a simple yt-video. I never had this problem before. Hope you can find anything.

the same issue. You run a tool in background which also uses ETW (same technology that xperf uses) and this corrupts the trace.
May 28th, 2013 9:14pm

How can I figure out which tool it is. When I check my running processes I see nothing I cannot explain?

how do you check it? With the taskmgr? The Win8 version also uses ETW.

Hi Andre,

Could you take a look at my trace please?

I tried to analyse it myself but got completely lost in the Performance Analyzer.

which issue do you have? I only see some CPU usage caused by chrome.exe (green).

the small cpu usgae (orange) by the service host exe comes from the Windows Account/LiveID service. which reads it configuration data.

Watch this video on how to use it:

Hi Andre,

Cheers for the video.

I think I may have jumped in with a slightly different issue. My CPU is fine but my memory has just recently started going to 99%. The taskmanager doesn't show any applications with using anywhere near enough memory to make up the 99%. I have 12GB of RAM so it really shouldn't be happening. I ran RAMMap and it seemed to show a huge amount of memory being taken up by the Nonpaged pool. No idea how to investigate it further though. Any ideas?

which issue do you have? The CPU is idle all the time.

The only thing you can do is to update the Atheros network driver from 10.0.0.216 to 10.0.0.234

http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=60&system=7

The other thing I can see is some ACPI.sys calls from accelerometer.sys (HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor). So update or remove this HP tool from your HP ProBook 4540s.

Memory usually goes up to 1.3Gb Ram without doing anything. most of them because of Service Host: Local Service(15,8, (network Restricted 7,8), No network,....) Disk also get up to 99-100%. when i look into Task manager and sort Disk to see which cause my disk goes to high. i see the " Antimalware Service Executable and Service Host: local system (network Restricted) (9).\

sorry for hijack this thread, I am not on Win 8, i am on Windows server 2008 r2, i see svchost.exe(NetworkService) high CPU usage. With Windows Explorer, i can find that it is threads for WinRM service in this process that actually consumes the CPU, i tried to restart Windows Remote Management service in services.msc but failed. I don't know what will cause if i kill the WinRM threads, so i just suspend them first. Then, CPU usage is normal. However, i still cannot restart the service in services.msc. Then, i killed these threads, and i can restart the Windows Remote Management service.

Your CPU usage comes from the Firewall service which tries to load/enumerate the Firewall rules (FirewallAPI.DLL!FwEnumRules).
July 12th, 2013 4:35pm

also provide the xperf file, so that I can see in detail what the WinRM service tries to do.

NO, you have a virus/malware with the name svhost.exe (without c) which uses your CPU to do some calculations.

in your case the CPU usage comes from Superfetch service. But I don't recommend you to disable it.

YOu should remove AVG and see if this improves the situation. There are 3 AVG tools which also generate a high CPU usage.

Windows 8 already includes Windows Defender. If this is enough for you, you can use it.

this is confusing. Taskhost.exe itself only causes the usage. There is no real callstack.

The only thing I can see is that the nvinitx.dll is loaded into this process. You use the nVIDIA driver 320.49. Try the latest beta and look if this fixes it:

This is the only thing that makes me dislike 8 so far, a fix would be fantastic.

hey im having the exact same problem as well

I don't know if people are still having this issue, but this is what I do when something like this happens:

1.) I go into task manager to locate the CPU hog, then trace it to Services, after locating the services causing the CPU overuse, I reset them. I don't recommend stopping anything, just restart it and see what happens. (This may take a short while to have an effect, or you will need to repeat this a few times.)

2.) The other fix that seems to work for me is to simply restart my Win8 PC.

These sort of problems usually happen to me when I put my PC on Standby or Hibernate (like Time Broker for instance). I'm not sure why this happens (this topic for another forum)...

Like I said, this is what happens to me. This may not be the same with other people, but I'd thought I'd share anyways.

you have WMI issues. You must run a second trace with this CMD:

Thanks a lot!

That works like charm!

How did you find it out? Is there any instruction on how to look at the the problem?

It would be useful for me to know how to check the problem.

I only see timeout.exe uses a lot of cpu time.

Thanks!

Hello Andre,

I was wondering if you would be able to help me figure out why my CPU usage is also so high please? Idles at 42-43% constantly.

I have tried everything I could think to resolve it but in the end I was referred to this thread and have followed the instructions to create the log file you wanted and uploaded to skydrive: Shortened link below.

Hi - I am guessing I am also another victim of sdclt.exe but I cannot pinpoint it. Task manager claims 100% cpu usage while Process Explorer does not say so. Here is the upload:

Hi - I am guessing I am also another victim of sdclt.exe

yes, you're also such a victim. Disable the task in the task scheduler.

the svchost.exe usage comes from the APp Experience service (required for UAC)

November 1st, 2013 2:27pm

Thank you for confirming, but I am no sure which task exactly is causing this.

I looked at Microsoft\Windows\"Application Experience", there are 3 jobs, none of them seem to have an action item that's relevant.

Same is true for 'WindowsBackup'

Application Experience Service was set to manual and stopping it for testing did not help. Looking at Process Explorer data does not provide useful info either.

I see a lot of these processes created and destroyed, yes, but I also see taskhostex.exe taking up the much of CPU. Is it b/c it's constantly creating and destroying these?

Dear Andre, please help!

I upgraded Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Pro and after install my HP6720s laptop is experiencing high CPU usage, heating and fan continuously working. I noticed in Task Manager that "Windows host process (rundll32)" is responsible for that situation, but I couldn`t figure why? After I kill that process in Task Manager (in order to test), fan immediately slows down, but after few minutes starts to work hard again, but not for so long as before killing rundll32 process. I`m stuck at this point, I couldn`t find right solution on the Internet, although I `ve seen a lot of people having problem with high CPU usage and processor heating on different laptops after transition from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.....

in your case the Application Experience Program Inventory Component (aeinv.dll) causes the high CPU usage (aeinv.dll!UpdateSoftwareInventoryW) by scanning all you installed software.

Was it a virus?

OK, I've been after the same issue for 2 weeks already, Windows 7 x64 Home Premium.

The culprit again was UPnP Device Host and as I need this service operational, I just couldn't disable it. So in my case I have a wireless network adapter, that is shared with my on-board wired LAN adapter. At the same time the wired adapter is disabled.

After removing the Internet connection sharing, svchost.exe stopped using 80%+ of CPU.

the small cpu usage comes from coreServiceShell.exe and YCMMirage.exe.

To see the RAM usage, too you must run this command:

The trace shows some CPU usgae spikes by a tool called (fnfdeiocg.exe) which uses OpenCL (igdfcl32.dll). I think this is a malware (based on the file location: C:\Users\Iulian\AppData\Local\Temp\pjruprzcodwy\fnfdeiocg.exe -c "C:\Users\Iulian\AppData\Local\Temp\pjruprzcodwy\cfgb").

Looks like this tool uses your hardware for some calculations. Boot into safe mode, run AutoRuns, cleanup the tools and do a virus scan.

Could you have a look at my file too. ;-)

Much appreciated.

the DNS client services loads the Host file into the RAM and this causes the periodic svchost.exe usage:

The host file was full with lines excluding ads websites (genrated by spybot). No need for that anymore when using Adblocker in Chrome.

Thanks for the tip Andre !!

Hello,

I see that you are helping people with this type of problem. Any chance you can look at my etl file and let me know what is causing the high CPU usage? My laptop was running fine then all of the sudden it started lagging and using 98% of the CPU. I appreciate your help!

Andre,

I've got another one for you. I installed a network card that wasn't compatible with Win8 and now my cpu and audio/video is going nuts. I've removed that card but I'm still having issues. Here is my file. Thanks

Hi Andre,

Please could you assist to analyse my etl file. Link is below.

100% CPU started yesterday. Most probable connection I can think of - I installed some Office patches that showed available.

Sorry - might have been bit longer than 30sec as prompt screen wasn't initially responsive. Compressed file is 11MB.

Many thanks.

I've made the "highCPUUsage.etl" but I can't seem to find it in my 7-zip File Manager. The only etl file I've found at all is labeled "kernel.etl" and it's found right in the local disk C:\ page. I've searched for it with my File Explorer and found it and it's listed as under C:\Windows\System32\ in there but when I open up to that file on my 7-zip File Manager it's not there. Should I just put the 43mb one in dropbox and post that link?

Hello, Andre!

This is a link to my xperf file, hope you can help me out with this. If it's in any way helpful, I get the high CPU spikes while streaming using a program called OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). However, it's not OBS that causes the spikes, it sits at a constant 27~32% CPU usage.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated!

Have a good day!
