Service Pack 1: Internet connection sharing fails
After installing SP1, the wifi internet connection is no longer available to other machines on the LAN. File transfers work OK on the LAN, and web browsers can get thru the addressing of web pages, but hang waiting for the page itself to come thru. Help! Fred

Hello Fred, This issue may be a little complex. Firstly, you may need to check if the involved computers have been correctly assigned IP addresses. Type ipconfig on each machine and check them compared with the normal one. You can also post them here and Ill check it for you. Cheers, Lionel

Hi Lionel !! Thanks for the reply. The IP addresses are all healthy: the Wifi comes up with 192.168.1.xxx, and the host laptopis at 192.168.0.1 -- the three other machines are a Win2000 laptop is 192.168.0.3 a Macintosh at 192.168.0.2 and a WinXP at 192.168.0.4 all with mask of 255.255.255.0 and default gateway at 192.168.0.1 Further observations since the original help request show that many things do work at each of the served machines... an update from Apple downloaded just fine to the laptop ( ! ), ping gets to www.google.com just fine from all three, and some websites do in fact load correctly on all the machines. BUT some websites which work just fine at the host laptop have stopped working suddenly with the SP1 upgrade -- most obviously just about anything from Yahoo. (makes me think there's some kind of vendetta from MS for Yahoo's refusal to be acquired in the marketplace!) (but other sites as well) Wish I could trace packets to see which isn't getting thru. All three served machines sit having got thru to the (yahoo.com, e. g.) website waiting with comments like "Opening page http://my.yahoo.com/" This is the case for MS Internet Explorer, Opera, and FireFox browsers! It is not dependent on being a https:// site... Anyway, I'm fascinated to ponder the kind of bottleneck evidenced here... Fred

Here'sstill more info beyond yesterday's reply... I got a packet trace of traffic on the local LAN and find the TCP sequence of events follows. WIN2000 machine (doing the trace):from WIN-Vista machine (Wifi host): (192.168.0.3) (192.168.0.1) Initiate transactions with SYN (twice, 165 uSec apart) (37 mSec later) Reply with SYN and open window (after 157 uSec) Send open window (after 131 uSec) Send open window (again) (after 990 uSec) Send http message requesting page frommy.yahoo.com (216.252.123.25) (after 129 uSec) Repeat http message (156 mSec later) acknowledge and move window (received from 216.252.123.25) ----- Up to this point, the sequence is essentially the same as a request for a page from www.google.com (74.125.19.147), but instead of data soon arriving from the web, only silence until: (75 Sec (!) later) ack/window repeated (after 150 uSec) send open window, no message (after 150 uSec) send open window, no message (again) (after 200 Sec more) send RST to reset connection SO: Either the initial request never gets forwarded to the my.yahoo.com server, or it's replies fail to be routed thru Vista back to the requesting LAN node. The request to my.yahoo.com from a browser on the Vista machine works just fine. IS A PUZZLEMENT!!! Fred PS: An interpreted dump of the http packet sent (twice) is available.

I'm having exactly the same problem and there appears to be no solution anywhere on the Internet. I had a similar problem with Live OneCare a few months agowhich prompted me to uninstall it completely and never try to use it again. Five days on the phonewith MS tech support and no one there could figure it out. I'm guessing that will happen here, too. I have three PCs connected via wired switch, one Vista SP1 and two XP SP2. The Vista PC has the Internet connection via Sprint SIerra Wireless USB device. It works fine. The other two PCs get to Google and THAT'S ALL. Ironic that the biggest poo-pooer of Microsoft has the only accessible site after a Service Pack install. All my IP addresses are fine, DNS is fine, the PCs can talk to each other, share files, print...just can't share the Internet connection. Tried turning off Windows FireWall, Avast! anti-virus, etc. Nothing helps. Surely someone in the world is smart enough to figure this out and provide the solution. I know it's not me!

Hello, please help me. I'm also having the same problem.. My connection is like this, i have a wired DSL internet connection connected to my laptop then i wish to share this internet connection with another laptop via wireless adhoc connection. For sometime this was successful, i was able to share connect the two laptops and share the internet connection, this was until i updated my windows vista. The problem is, when i create an adhoc wireless connection on the 1st screen i'll be typing the Network name then password, then.. i click next it should say "(Name of network) network is ready to use..then a button SHOULD appear that states "Share Internet Connection".. How come the button is NOT there any more??? Thus i cant share my internet connection with the other laptop...
