Sharing Win 7 files with XP keeps prompting for user/password
I have issue since upgrading my file server from xp to win 7. Several xp comps now access win 7 shares - all on same workgroup. I added a Share login ID to win 7 and configed xp comps to "reconnect at logon" and "connect using a different user name" (using the win 7 Share login id). The shares map fine but keep prompting for login info after either the win 7 file server reboots or the xp comps reboot. Did not have that behavior when file server was xp. Once mapped, they used the id and password specified during the original mapping. How do I get same behavior with my win 7 file server?I see a lot of references to win 7 Homegroup stuff in forums. I don't want that. I want the user/password mode I had when sharing in xp.Thanks,Jeff

some networks need for win 7 to be dumbed down.In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try Enable network discoveryTurn on file and print sharingTurn off password protected sharingTurn on Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption. Please check related policies. 1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box. 2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings.3. In the right pane, enable the following policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translationNetwork access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Also please disable the following policies. Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and SharesNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accountsNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares Change the following policy:Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Change the value to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”. If the issue persists, change the Kerberos encryption type. 1. Open gpedit.msc. 2. Find the policy Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options ->Network Security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos 3. Configure the policy. If it is not configured, actually both DES cipher suites are disabled. I suggest that you enable all the suits. Then please check the result. If a HOME version of win 7 1. Launch regedit from Start Search box.2. Find the following branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa 3. Create a DWORD key under Lsa and set: Name: LmCompatibilityLevel Value: 1 4. Restart.
