Sharing a drive under Windows Vista with a PC running Windows XP
Hi, I have a home network with 3 PC's on it. ! is running Vista, and the others are running XP Pro. I have tired sharing 2 drives on the Vista machine with one of the XP machines. Drive G can be seen and fully accessed, but the other drive, drive F can be seen, including the folders on it, but none of them can be opened at all. The error message is given as "\\drive name\Mars\downloads is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.Access is Denied."I don't think it is an issue with LLTD, as one drive can already be seen, and all I have done is share for everyone to have full control of the drive. Even though I didn't do this for each folder on the drive, they can still be accessed. For drive F, I shared each individual folder as well, all to no avail.I would be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction!!Bob Moore

Hi Bob, Its quite possible that users have read permissions but not execute permissions. Try modifying the permissions on the top level share and replace permission on all child objects so that the permissions go down the levels and is applied to all users for all folders. The reason why the first drive works is because it has different permission levels.

Hello Bob, This has nothing to do with LLTD. The LLTD allows the Windows XP machines to show up in the Network Map window on Vista. It doesn't effect file sharing. If you are trying to share the root of the drive, you need to set share permissions and then folder permissions. In Vista, it is a little harder to do than in Windows XP as sharing the root of the drive is considered insecure than sharing specific folders. You can view or set folder permissions by selecting the properties of the drive and then selecting the Security tab. If you haven't already, you can also refer to the following article that discusses file and printer sharing on Windows Vista. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx If you need additonal help, then let us know. -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com
