Simple issue with networking
I hate to weigh down the board with a seemingly simple quesiton/problem, but I'm at a loss at this point. Phone Tech Support had *no* idea what they were doing and jeapordized data while trying to "find" the problem. This one's a two parter, and they are separate questions. 1)We are running a business with a small network of 3 pc's, all running Vista Home Premium. Using a tax program, hosted from machine A, run on pc's B & C from A's HDD. If only two of those three are running the program, everything is just fine. Once the third pc enters the program and attempts to manipulate data, all 3 lock up & require a restart to get the program running again. The tax programs tech support said this was because we're running Home, not business. I dont buy that answer, because of the results of problem #2. 2)After fighting the first problem, we thought running the program from each machine, but pointing the program to look at machine A (only on B & C) for database info (not program files.) This is all supported nativly in the program. Let me run through the steps I took real quick to accomplish this. I installed the tax prog on machine B, and immediatly after installing it runs the program. At this point, I tell it to look at the mapped drive, dubbed Z:, which is PC A's C: drive. It reads the data fine, and performs outstanding. The problem with this is that after the program is closed on machine B, then reopened, it displays an error message : "Cannot access drive Z:, Your shared drive letter may be incorrect..."Which is not true, because no less than 15 seconds ago the program was indeed looking at drive Z, and successfully pulling / writing data to it. A solution to either question would be of tremendous benefit to us. If there is anything you can think of that would help, please let me know Thank you in advance! Sorry for any spelling errors

Hi Stevo Smith, Please understand that we do not have enough information to analyze the behavior of the tax program, and thus we are not the best resource for this issue. From your description, I noticed that the tax programs tech support said the issue occurred because you are using Windows Vista Home but not Business. If so, I think this issue may be related to program limitation. Just for your reference, if you consider to upgrade the Windows Vista to Business, you can check the Upgrade paths between versions of Windows Vista in the following KB article: Installation choices for consumer versions of Windows Vista (32-bit only) http://support.microsoft.com/?id=932616 Hope the information is helpful.
