Skype for Business Personal Information Manager uploads about 1.2 MB every 5 minutes

NetBalancer is reporting that Skype for Business (Lync.exe) is uploading about 1.2 MB at regular 5 minutes intervals, night and day, whether there has been any computer or SfB activity or not. When I'm on a connection with limited bandwidth, it heavily impacts my internet activities while this upload is in progress.

I have discovered that disabling the Personal Information Manager (PIM) in Settings makes this problem go away. I do not want to disable the PIM because it includes features that notify me of missed conversations, save my conversations in Outlook, etc.

What is the PIM causing SfB to *upload* every 5 minutes? Can it be made to happen: much less frequently, using less bandwidth, only when necessary, or on demand?

While workaround suggestions are welcome, please don't send me any that involve disabling part of SfB unless you've also diagnosed the underlying problem and are already working on a fix.
