Slow logoff windows 7 domain
Windows 7 takes forever to log me off. In the event viewer, the following event is generated: Log Name: Application Source: Microsoft-Windows-Winlogon Date: 21-4-2010 13:48:42 Event ID: 6006 Task Category: None Level: Warning Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Description: The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> took 63 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logoff). How do I fix this?

Can you please check if your DNS entry in your TCP\IP properties is pointing to the right DNS server, also can you try disabling IPV6 if not used in your environment and checking the same. -Mukesh

The DNS server is correct. I turned off IPv6. However the same error is reported in Event Viewer. A minute earlier the following error is reported (21-4-2010 15:16:41): Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards. DETAIL - 1 user registry handles leaked from \Registry\User\S-1-5-21-1810388328-4218931038-2860259147-1354: Process 716 (\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Windows\System32\winlogon.exe) has opened key \REGISTRY\USER\S-1-5-21-1810388328-4218931038-2860259147-1354 and then, a minute later (21-4-2010 15:17:41): The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> is taking long time to handle the notification event (Logoff). And then a second later (21-4-2010 15:17:42): The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> took 61 second(s) to handle the notification event (Logoff).

Have you scanned the machine with an updated version of Anti-virus, also try disabling the firewall. Also you can try using User Profile Hive Cleanup Service http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en If installing the User profile Hive Cleanup Service works on the next restart check Event Viewer and UPHive will log which application, was taking time to shutdown the system. Later you can take actions on the same.. -Mukesh

I've scanned the computer and it has no viruses. I disabled the firewall. Didn't help. When I tried to install User Profile Hive Cleanup it returned an error stating that it doesn't work under Windows 7.

I'm extremely sorry, i overlooked it as User Profile Hive Cleanup Service is not supported by Vista, Windows 7 & 2008 Server R2, also its officially dormant. So we won't be seeing any new release very soon or never. Well you can try the clean boot method and see is the problem persists. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 -Mukesh

Thanks for replying. I've tried the clean boot method. I even disabled some microsoft services that I knew I didn't need. I logged off a couple of times, but still it takes more than a minute.
