Outlook Express does not have a spell check of its own and the one in Open Office will not work. You need Word or an MS Office program, pre 2007. The spell checker in Works 4 through 6 will work with OE, but not other editions. If you do not have such a program, you can download a free spell check at one of these sites.Vampirefo Spell Check.Download it from Major Geeks:http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952Or download it from SnapFile:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spelloe.htmlOr you may like TinySpell. (Checks the spelling as you type).Download it here:http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/In the future, Outlook Express questions should be asked here.XP - Networking, Mail And Getting Online Forumhttp://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpnetwork/threadsBruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

If you upgrade OE to Windows Live Mail, the latest versions do have spell checkers.-- Terry Farrell - MSWord MVP "Lucette Wuschner" wrote in message news:Email removed for privacy...Have re installed windows XP as well as Outlook express due to a virus. Also have downloaded Open Office software. spellcheck works using open office. In the outlook express toolbar the spellcheck icon is not highlighted. What do I have to do to make the spellcheck work?Terry Farrell

Why should the OP have to replace her default Mail Client to be able to have spell-checking available?PS: Windows Live Mail (AKA Wal-Mail) is NOT an "upgrade" for OE users, especially since the current version of Windows Live Mail is not supported in WinXP (nor is any other Windows Live Essentials 2011 application).~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Agreed, its not necessary to replace OE for a spell checker when a third party application or applicable MSFT application(if available) will work just fine.Just in case someone wants to travel down the Windows Live Essentials path <g>Windows Live Essentials 2009- For XP SP2, Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008Full Version Installer English Language version http://g.live.com/1rewlive3/en/wlsetup-all.exeWeb Version Installer – English Language Version http://g.live.com/1rewlive3/en/wlsetup-web.exe Windows Live Essentials 2011- For Vista SP2 with Platform Update for Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 SP2 with Platform Update Windows Server 2008 R2)Full Version Installer English Language version http://g.live.com/1rewlive4-all/en/wlsetup-all.exeWeb Version Installer – English Language Version http://g.live.com/1rewlive4-web/en/wlsetup-web.exeNote: The above are the English language installers.
