Running windows 7 64 bit, and been loading up lots of software and printers, all has been running fine, then I did a restart and it would not load and it will not repair, most annoyingly when I go to system restore I have lots of restore points but am unable to select any of them to click the next button which remains greyed out in the status section it says "you must enable system protection on this drive" for the local disk C: but no idea how to do this or if that is why I can not tick the box which is greyed out to allow me to restore to a previously working state. Forgot to say I have tried booting up in safe mode and that makes no difference

Mark - You might want to consider trying an "in place upgrade" - meaning you're installing Windows 7 on top of itself. As such, your data files and programs will stay put - however, Windows 7 will be restored to it's virgin freshly installed state.

I did not see the option for an "in place upgrade" from the boot cd. where do I find that option. I n the end I had to do a complete restore and lost everything

OKAY FOLKS! Got GREAT NEWS for SOME of YOU who have gotten the dreaded "STARTUP CANNOT REPAIR THIS COMPUTER AUTOMATICALLY" message. I know its really a drag especially since you canNOT do an IN-PLACE UPGRADE "repair" unless you can return to FULL-MODE WINDOWS! Please don't be angry if this solution does not apply to your situation. But after this lightning bolt from above worked for me, by the grace of the Almighty I felt it my duty to the Windows community to pass it forward! Here goes already. Got an older machine that had Windows Vista on it already? Did you do an upgrade to Windows 7 or did you try the dual-boot option to give Windows 7 a spin first only to find that Windows 7 is an absolute JOY? If you did an upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7, do you have enough disk space to install either another Windows 7 or Windows Vista installation for future repair purposes? YES I SAID REPAIR PURPOSES! Well here we go. Windows 7 has been a dream till just recently. Up popped out of nowhere a notification from my Anti-Virus software, "INFECTION BLOCKED". That's when my havoc began after a trojan that infected my ATAPI.SYS files after scan and quarantine left my machine unbootable due to a "necessary device inaccessible ". If I had it to do all over again, rest assured I would have done an immediate SYSTEM RESTORE to some point before all this happened! Anywho, since nothing Windows 7 native was able to repair the boot sequence, it occurred to me to try the SYSTEM RESTORE under my old VISTA installation since instead of the UPGRADE, I repartitioned the drive and installed WIN7 for some dual-boot love. NOTE! Repartitioning using the usual tools under Disk Management to get enough space might be a bit difficult because Windows uses the last bits on the partition to store system files. Those system files will have to be moved in some cases by such options as turning off you page file, using a powerful defragger like Auslogics or if necessary PerfectDisk or Diskeeper to consolidate files on whatever Windows is on the first partition of the drive. There is a lot on the web concerning this subject regarding what all might need to temporarily be disabled in order to get enough drive space. Look up "cannot shrink partition". After that hurdle you're ready to install what might someday be your life-saver repair OS. Not much space required if you are not going to use it much. If restore points are available, do a SYSTEM RESTORE from the OS you can still boot into, in my case it was VISTA. If SYSTEM RESTORE option to set a point for all drives was enabled, there may be some HALLELUYAH LIGHT at the end of the tunnel! Try to boot into what was your damaged Windows. If you still get the same errors, don't despair. The system restore alone may not be enough to fix the problem. Use you original disk or USB flash drive to boot into the STARTUP repair options and NOW let STARTUP REPAIR work its magic then REBOOT! VOILA! If you had a malware infection, I'd advise a scan. In my case, INFECTION GONE! BOOT-UP PROBLEMS FIXED, SOLVED! FINITO!

ADDENDUM! All things considered, it appears that at times SYSTEM RESTORE will not give the option to restore to an earlier point on a drive or partition where there exists another Windows OS. BUMMER! I tried all these scenarios having nothing to loose since I already had INFO BACKUP! FIRST LAW of NATURE is SELF-PRESERVATION! But thought I'd try a few things. In any case, it was better than having to do a complete OS and software install! In this case as a last resort, I also have had occasion to try to do an IN-PLACE UPGRADE to my unbootable WINDOWS 7 OS from the undamaged OS on the first partition. (In my case it was VISTA ). You have to do whatever upgrade from within Windows full mode. This was scary, but it worked. Tried to see if the WINDOWS 7 repair upgrade would work from a VISTA. Nothing doin'! The repair would not continue under VISTA because the OS had INCOMPATIBLE software on it and would not pass WINDOWS 7 compatibility check. Compatibility check suggested an upgrade or uninstall of the INCOMPATIBLE SOFTWARE and returned the VISTA install back to NORMAL as if I had never attempted the "upgrade". Went back and tried to boot into WINDOWS 7. FAILED! Used STARTUP REPAIR. VOILA! BACK IN BUSINESS! BTW. Keep in mind that with regard to the dual-boot rather than upgrade path to WINDOWS 7, a "clean install" is better anyway. CHEERS!

Now my Laptop couldn't boot. It just starts, and when you press F8, the usual options appear. But none of them worked for me. When I enter one of the choices, it will immediately go to startup Repair and displays this text on a window. When I clicked the second option it takes me to some kind of Toshiba restore mode Warning! When the recovery is executed, all data will be deleted and rewritten.............. , but since I have a document I really wanted on the hard disk, I am not going to format it, unless I got that document. Is there any way, I could find this document. By the way when it says "deleted and rewritten" is that means there is a chance to find my document after the recovery has been made. I think the reason was ... after 3 weeks, my Kaspersky Anti-Virus started blocking Windows explorer(explorer.exe)... even it detected it as a virus ... even it kill the explorer process and then restart it again for several times. Please my friend if there is any means to get this data back, I would like to sacrifice anything. I hope to get the best help. Thank you.

After downloading and installing Bullguard Internet Security V10 and running a virus scan (no virus or malware reported) carried out a restart as required and got a message "System Events Notification Service could not be accessed" Unable to start or restart any systems. Unable to edit or adjust any IP addresses or DCHP options. On checking found that there appeard to be a general failure and was unable to restart any essential services even after unenabling Bullguard Firewall and Anti-virus. Uninstalled Bullguard, but still received same message. The computer was unable to access internet aas it did not "see" the router however was able to access the internet via Explorer 8 by opening router IP and then selecting Google from favourites. was able to browse internet as normal Then tried a system restore, but the same problem persisted, so re-restored. Then tried run sfc_/scannow with Windows 7 disk in CD-ROM but no joy. Then tried a upgrade of Windows 7 over the existing Windows 7 to replace any corrupted or missing files, but no joy. as same message and conditions persisted. (In fact the new upgrade of Windows 7 was not successful) and returned the system to original configuration. Could see no option for "inplace upgrade" Am able to use programs but PC does not see Network Printer, or anything with an IP address. Please help - does this new a complete Clean install?
