Static IP - Unidentified Network - No Access to Internet
I have 2 computers both running Win7 RC. One is a Dell 9200 - running 64-bit version. the other is a Dell 5150 - running 32-bit version. With the Dell 9200, I use static addressing and connect to my local network and the internet with no problem. With the Dell 5150, if I use static addressing, I connect fine to the local network but get an Unidentified network connection and have no access to the Internet; however, if I use DHCP addressing I connect to both local and Internet just fine. Except for the IP, my static settings on the 5150 are identical to the 9200. Since I prefer to use static addressing any help would be appreciated.

Is the static IP address in a range reserved for private networks? Some ping tests could help find the problem: ping <default gateway> ping <DNS server> ping 208.67.222.222 ping resolver1.opendns.comSteve Winograd MS-MVP (Windows Desktop Experience)

I fixed it. I run a program called Input Director (ID) to share the keyboard and mouse from the Master (the Dell 9200) with the Slave (the Dell 5159) which does not have a connected Keyboard/Mouse. I stopped the ID program on the slave, directly connected a KB and Mouse and was then able to switch to static IP addressing. After that, I restarted ID on the slave, removed the keyboard and mouse and everything is running OK. My guess is that running ID while making the change cuased the problem. Other than that one issue, ID runs very well with W7.
